Karnataka Congress Calls CLP Meeting Amid Leadership Transition After Siddaramaiah’s Resignation

Bengaluru, May 2026 : In a key political development following the resignation of Siddaramaiah from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister, the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) meeting has been convened on Saturday to decide the next leader of the legislature party, who is expected to take over as the new Chief Minister.

The meeting has been called at a crucial juncture in Karnataka politics, with the Congress party moving swiftly to formalise its leadership transition. According to party officials, the CLP meeting will begin at 4 p.m. in the Conference Hall of Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru.

Caretaker Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who currently serves as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party, will preside over the meeting. The primary agenda is to elect a new CLP leader following his resignation from the Chief Minister’s post.

Once elected, the new CLP leader is widely expected to be nominated as the party’s choice for Chief Minister of Karnataka, subject to approval from the Congress high command.

The announcement regarding the meeting was made by Allamaprabhu Patil, MLA and Secretary of the Congress Legislature Party. He confirmed that all elected representatives of the party have been instructed to attend.

“All MLAs, MLCs, Lok Sabha MPs, and Rajya Sabha members of the party have been requested to be present for the CLP meeting,” Patil said.

Senior leaders including Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) President D.K. Shivakumar, AICC General Secretary and Karnataka in-charge Randeep Singh Surjewala, Legislative Council floor leader N.S. Bose Raju, and other executive presidents of the party are also expected to attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, Siddaramaiah returned from New Delhi after holding a series of high-level meetings with Congress leadership, including Rahul Gandhi and AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge. He is expected to reach HAL Airport in Bengaluru at around 5:30 p.m. on Friday.

During his visit to Delhi, Siddaramaiah participated in multiple discussions on the future leadership structure of the state Congress government. Before departing, he, D.K. Shivakumar, Congress MLC Yathindra Siddaramaiah, and former minister K.H. Muniyappa were seen sharing a lunch meeting, signalling continued coordination within the party leadership.

Siddaramaiah also met AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal in the national capital. Later, he held separate discussions with D.K. Shivakumar and former minister K.J. George, further intensifying speculation about the leadership transition.

Amid these developments, Karnataka Minister H.K. Patil on Friday stated that D.K. Shivakumar is set to become the next Chief Minister and is likely to take oath within the next two days.

Patil said that Shivakumar has already been recognised as the Chief Minister-designate within party circles. He added that Siddaramaiah himself had indicated during discussions in Delhi that he had been advised by the party high command to step down and support Shivakumar’s elevation.

The CLP meeting on Saturday is now expected to be decisive in formalising the leadership change, marking a significant shift in Karnataka’s political landscape as the Congress moves to consolidate its internal consensus.
