Cuddalore Woman’s Murder Sparks Political Row Over Law and Order in Tamil Nadu
Chennai, May 29: The brutal murder of a 25-year-old woman in Cuddalore has triggered a sharp political confrontation in Tamil Nadu, with Leader of the Opposition Udhayanidhi Stalin launching a strong attack on the state government over its handling of law and order.
Calling the incident “deeply shocking,” Udhayanidhi Stalin said on Friday that the recurring cases of murder, robbery, and sexual violence across the state have created an atmosphere of fear and raised serious doubts about public safety in Tamil Nadu.
In a statement, he alleged that the situation has worsened under the current administration led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, claiming that violent crimes have become a daily occurrence.
“Since the #SofaModelGovernment came to power, hardly a day has passed without incidents of murder, robbery, or sexual violence being reported,” he said.
Udhayanidhi also accused the Chief Minister of failing to live up to the promises made during the election campaign, particularly on issues related to law and order and women’s safety.
Taking a direct swipe at the Chief Minister, he remarked that the leader who once spoke extensively about policing and public safety “with prepared notes and punch dialogues” has now gone into what he described as a “Deep Sleep Mode” after assuming office.
The Opposition leader also raised concerns over the government’s women’s safety initiative, pointing out that the much-publicised “Singappen Force” project has faced delays and confusion. He noted reports suggesting that the launch event for the initiative was cancelled at the last minute.
He questioned whether the programme had merely been postponed or whether it had been effectively shelved.
“Is changing the name and uniform of the Singappen Force the only change being made? Or does the government need more time to establish and maintain law and order?” he asked.
Udhayanidhi further said that Tamil Nadu cannot afford delays in addressing rising crime and ensuring public safety, stressing that governance should prioritise immediate and effective action rather than prolonged preparation.
He argued that the people of the state are increasingly concerned about safety, particularly women, and expect swift and decisive measures from the government rather than announcements that remain unimplemented.
The remarks have intensified the political debate in the state, with the Opposition accusing the government of administrative failure, while the ruling side is yet to issue an official response to the allegations.
The Cuddalore murder case continues to draw public attention, with calls for stricter policing and faster investigation as political tensions over the incident escalate.
