EPFO to Launch UPI-Based Claim Settlement Through BHIM App Within a Month
New Delhi, July 2026 : The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is set to introduce a new digital mechanism for settling provident fund claims through the BHIM app, allowing members to receive claim amounts directly in their UPI-linked bank accounts. The new framework is expected to be implemented within the next month, Central Provident Fund Commissioner Ramesh Krishnamurthy said on Friday.
The initiative is part of EPFO’s broader efforts to modernise its services, simplify procedures and provide faster and more convenient services to millions of employees and employers.
Under the proposed mechanism, EPFO members will be able to initiate their claims through the BHIM app, while the approved amount will be credited directly to their UPI-linked bank accounts. The move is expected to reduce processing time and make the overall claim settlement process more seamless.
Krishnamurthy said the framework for the new system was being finalised and could be implemented within a maximum period of one month. The initiative is expected to strengthen EPFO’s digital service delivery and reduce the dependence on conventional claim settlement processes.
The EPFO chief also spoke about the implementation of social security measures for gig and platform workers. He said the Code on Social Security provides for a dedicated social security scheme for gig workers, platform workers and other workers in the unorganised sector.
According to Krishnamurthy, the government will announce the scheme and identify the agency responsible for implementing it once the framework is finalised. Depending on the government’s decision, EPFO or another designated agency could be entrusted with implementing the scheme.
Krishnamurthy urged employers and employees to remain committed to EPFO, describing it as an important retirement safety net and a key component of social security coverage.
He said the organisation’s ongoing reforms were aimed at providing world-class services to its members while making the system more efficient and accessible.
The EPFO is also planning further compliance-related reforms aimed at simplifying the way employers interact with the organisation. Krishnamurthy said these measures would reduce procedural complexities and make compliance easier for employers.
He expressed confidence that the overall reform package would strengthen trust among both employers and employees and position EPFO as a more reliable partner in providing social security and supporting retirement planning.
