Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing Begins Five-Day India Visit, Talks With PM Modi Scheduled

New Delhi, May 2026 : Myanmar President U Min Aung Hlaing will begin a five-day official visit to India on Saturday at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral relations between the two neighbouring countries. The visit, which will run until June 4, is President U Min Aung Hlaing’s first trip to India since assuming office earlier this year.

The Myanmar President will commence his visit from Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, one of the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world, where Lord Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. The choice of Bodh Gaya as the starting point of the visit highlights the deep cultural and civilisational links shared by India and Myanmar through Buddhism.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), President U Min Aung Hlaing will hold comprehensive talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 1. The discussions are expected to focus on further enhancing cooperation in areas such as connectivity, trade, security, infrastructure development, capacity building and regional cooperation.

The Myanmar leader will be accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes cabinet ministers, senior government officials and prominent business leaders. During his stay, he is also scheduled to participate in a business forum aimed at expanding economic engagement and exploring new investment opportunities between the two countries.

On June 2, President U Min Aung Hlaing will travel to Mumbai, where he will engage with industry leaders, visit key business establishments and hold discussions on trade and investment partnerships. The Mumbai leg of the visit is expected to focus on strengthening commercial ties and encouraging greater private-sector collaboration.

The MEA described Myanmar as a key partner situated at the intersection of India’s “Neighbourhood First,” “Act East,” and “MAHASAGAR” policies. Officials noted that the visit is expected to deepen the multifaceted relationship between the two countries and reinforce cooperation across strategic, economic and developmental sectors.

India and Myanmar share a long land border as well as maritime boundaries, making bilateral cooperation important for regional stability and connectivity. Myanmar also serves as a crucial gateway linking India to Southeast Asia under New Delhi’s Act East policy.

The visit follows recent high-level exchanges between the two countries. In April, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh visited Myanmar and attended President U Min Aung Hlaing’s swearing-in ceremony. During the visit, he conveyed Prime Minister Modi’s congratulations and reiterated India’s commitment to expanding cooperation and developmental assistance.

President U Min Aung Hlaing assumed office on April 3 after stepping down as Myanmar’s Commander-in-Chief. Prior to that, he had led the country since 2021 following the military takeover.

The upcoming discussions between Prime Minister Modi and President U Min Aung Hlaing are expected to review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and chart a roadmap for stronger cooperation in the years ahead, reflecting the strategic importance both nations attach to their longstanding partnership.
