Iran Says No Final Agreement Reached With US, Talks Continue Amid Ceasefire Efforts
Tehran, May 2026 : Iran has clarified that no final agreement has yet been reached with the United States, despite recent statements by US President Donald Trump outlining conditions for a possible deal between the two countries. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said negotiations remain ongoing and both sides continue to exchange messages through diplomatic channels.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Iran’s state-run broadcaster, Baghaei stressed that discussions are still at a preliminary stage and that no binding arrangement has been concluded. His remarks came shortly after President Donald Trump publicly detailed several demands that Washington wants incorporated into a potential agreement with Tehran.
Baghaei emphasized that Iran’s immediate priority remains ending the conflict and consolidating the ceasefire that took effect earlier this year. “Our focus in the negotiations is on ending the war,” he said, adding that discussions concerning Iran’s uranium enrichment programme and stockpiles of enriched uranium are not currently under consideration.
“We have no talks on details related to uranium enrichment or enriched uranium at this stage,” the spokesman noted, indicating that the nuclear issue remains outside the scope of the present negotiations.
Addressing reports about the possible reopening of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, Baghaei asserted that decisions regarding the management and operation of the waterway concern only Iran and Oman. His comments appeared to push back against suggestions that the issue could be dictated by external powers.
Earlier on Friday, President Trump stated that any agreement would require Iran to permanently abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons. He also called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to unrestricted shipping traffic and the removal of any remaining naval mines in the area.
Trump further claimed that Iran’s enriched uranium stockpiles, reportedly buried underground following military strikes last year, would be recovered and destroyed through a coordinated effort involving Iran, the United States and the International Atomic Energy Agency. He also indicated that no financial compensation would be provided to Iran under the proposed arrangement.
The latest exchange of statements comes in the aftermath of a ceasefire reached on April 8 between Iran, the United States and Israel following 40 days of hostilities. Since then, diplomatic efforts have reportedly intensified, with multiple proposals being exchanged through mediation channels aimed at creating a framework for a longer-term settlement.
According to reports, negotiators are working toward a memorandum of understanding that could lay the groundwork for future agreements. However, Baghaei’s remarks underscore that significant differences remain and that negotiations are still far from reaching a final conclusion.
As diplomatic contacts continue, the international community is closely monitoring developments, given their potential impact on regional stability, energy markets and broader geopolitical relations in the Middle East.
