Israel, Lebanon Agree on Ceasefire Framework Amid Continued Cross-Border Hostilities

Washington/Beirut, June 2026 : Israel and Lebanon on Wednesday agreed to move forward with a ceasefire framework aimed at reducing tensions along their shared border, following US-led negotiations in Washington. The agreement, however, is contingent on what both sides described as a “complete cessation” of attacks by the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah.

In a joint statement issued after the talks, the two countries outlined a series of confidence-building measures designed to pave the way for a broader political and security agreement. Although Israel and Lebanon do not maintain formal diplomatic relations, the negotiations marked a significant step toward de-escalation after months of heightened conflict.

A key element of the understanding is the creation of “pilot zones” in southern Lebanon, where the Lebanese Armed Forces will assume exclusive control. According to the statement, these areas will be free from the presence of any non-state armed groups, a move seen as a direct effort to limit Hezbollah’s military activities in the region.

The two sides also agreed to resume discussions during the week of June 22, focusing on political and security issues with the objective of reaching a comprehensive and long-term agreement.

The joint statement emphasised that the future relationship between Israel and Lebanon should be determined solely by their respective sovereign governments. It also rejected attempts by any state or non-state actor to influence Lebanon’s future, an apparent reference to Iran and Hezbollah.

The diplomatic breakthrough comes days after US President Donald Trump announced that both countries had committed to lowering tensions and exploring avenues for peace.

Despite the progress in negotiations, violence continued on the ground. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for missile attacks targeting northern Israel on Wednesday, while Lebanese authorities reported that Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least nine people, including two paramedics.

The continued exchange of fire highlights the challenges facing efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire. While the agreement represents a significant diplomatic development, observers note that its success will depend largely on whether hostilities cease and both sides adhere to the commitments outlined during the Washington talks.
