India’s Growth Engine in Top Gear, Passenger Vehicle Sales Jump 23% in May 2026: Piyush Goyal
New Delhi, June 2026 : Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said that India’s economic growth momentum is “in top gear,” citing strong performance in the passenger vehicle sector, which recorded significant expansion in May 2026.
In a post on social media platform X, the minister highlighted that India’s passenger vehicle market reached nearly 4.4 lakh units in May 2026, reflecting a robust 23 per cent year-on-year growth despite global economic uncertainties.
He said the growth was primarily driven by leading domestic automobile manufacturers, including Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra.
“India’s growth engine is in top gear! India’s passenger vehicle market clocked nearly 4.4 lakh units in May 2026, registering 23 per cent year-on-year growth, led by Maruti Suzuki India, Tata Motors and Mahindra Auto, reflecting strong consumer demand despite global uncertainties,” Goyal said.
He further stated that the strong demand for domestically manufactured vehicles is a clear sign of rising consumer confidence in Indian products and the strengthening of the country’s automotive ecosystem.
According to the minister, this upward trend reflects the success of the government’s flagship manufacturing initiative, which has aimed to position India as a global production hub. He said the increasing preference for locally manufactured vehicles highlights the growing impact of the “Make in India” vision launched under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The robust demand for Made-in-India vehicles reflects growing consumer confidence, a thriving manufacturing ecosystem, and the transformative impact of PM Narendra Modi’s Make in India vision,” he added.
Goyal also linked the automobile sector’s strong performance to India’s broader economic transformation, stating that innovation, entrepreneurship, and rising aspirations of 140 crore citizens are collectively driving the country towards the goal of a developed nation.
“The journey towards Viksit Bharat is being driven by innovation, enterprise, and the aspirations of 140 crore Indians,” he said.
Industry data further supports the minister’s observations. India’s largest automaker, Maruti Suzuki India, reported its highest-ever monthly domestic sales in May 2026, dispatching 1,90,337 passenger vehicles to dealers. The company recorded nearly 40 per cent year-on-year growth, surpassing its previous monthly record set just a month earlier in April.
Analysts say the sustained demand in the passenger vehicle segment reflects improving consumer sentiment, easier financing conditions, and rising preference for personal mobility solutions, especially in semi-urban and rural markets.
With strong domestic demand and expanding manufacturing capacity, the Indian automobile sector continues to remain one of the key drivers of industrial growth, reinforcing confidence in the country’s broader economic trajectory.
