US Shoots Down Iranian Drones Near Strait of Hormuz, Strikes Coastal Radar Sites
Washington, June 2026 : Tensions in the Gulf region escalated sharply after the United States military announced that it had intercepted four Iranian attack drones heading toward the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz and subsequently carried out strikes on Iranian coastal surveillance installations.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the drones were detected moving toward one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints and were considered an immediate threat to commercial shipping and regional maritime security.
In a statement issued on Friday (local time), CENTCOM said American forces successfully neutralised the four one-way attack drones before they could pose any danger to vessels operating in the area.
“Moments ago, CENTCOM forces shot down four Iranian one-way attack drones that were launched toward the Strait of Hormuz,” the statement said, adding that the drones represented a direct threat to maritime traffic in the region.
Following the interception, US forces launched retaliatory strikes targeting Iranian surveillance infrastructure along the southern coastline. CENTCOM stated that coastal radar facilities located in Goruk and on Qeshm Island were struck to prevent further attacks and enhance maritime security in the area.
“US forces subsequently struck Iranian coastal surveillance radar sites in Goruk and on Qeshm Island to defend against further attacks,” CENTCOM said.
The US military did not disclose details regarding the extent of damage inflicted on the radar installations or whether there were any casualties resulting from the strikes. It also did not reveal the specific aircraft, missiles, or weapon systems used during the operation.
Officials further refrained from providing additional information on whether any commercial ships were directly targeted by the drones before they were intercepted.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most critical maritime routes in the world, serving as a gateway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman before connecting to the Arabian Sea. A significant portion of global oil and liquefied natural gas exports passes through the narrow waterway, making security in the region a major international concern.
The latest developments come amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran, with both sides closely monitoring military activity in and around the Gulf. The United States maintains a substantial military presence across the Middle East, including naval assets tasked with safeguarding international shipping lanes and ensuring freedom of navigation.
CENTCOM emphasised that American forces remain on high alert and are prepared to respond to any further threats.
“American forces remain vigilant and postured to respond to unjustified Iranian aggression in self-defence,” the command stated.
As of now, there has been no official response from Iran regarding the drone interceptions or the strikes on the radar facilities. There were also no indications of wider military operations beyond the actions outlined by CENTCOM.
The incident adds another layer of uncertainty to an already volatile region, with global markets and international shipping operators likely to watch developments in the Strait of Hormuz closely in the coming days.
