India Cries Foul As Pakistan Organises Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Polls.

New Delhi/Islamabad; June 2026: Yesterday (Friday – 05th June 2026) India has lodged a strong protest with Pakistan regarding the latter’s plans to hold “General Elections” for the “Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly”, in the Indian territories illegally and forcibly occupied by Pakistan. The election is scheduled to be held tomorrow (07th June 2026), as per a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs.

The Government of India reiterated its well-known position that the entire Union Territories of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, including the so-called “Gilgit Baltistan”, are integral and inalienable parts of India as a result of complete, legal and irrevocable accession of Jammu & Kashmir to India in 1947.

The Government of India further emphasised that such endeavours by Pakistan cannot mask the underlying issues of grave human rights violations, political repression, economic exploitation and denial of freedom in territories illegally occupied by Pakistan.

The Government of India categorically rejects any attempts by Pakistan to bring material change to areas under Pakistan’s illegal occupation, and underlines that such actions cannot hide the fact that Pakistan illegally remains in possession of Indian territories, which it must vacate, as per the statement.

Meanwhile, PoJK human rights activist Amjad Ayub Mirza has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene on behalf of residents of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK), alleging widespread rights violations and increasing pressure on political activists in the region. According to Mirza, political and civil rights campaigners in Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB) are facing arrests, detentions, and other forms of repression. He claimed that numerous members and leaders of the Gilgit-Baltistan Awami Action Committee have been jailed in what he described as an effort to curb demands for political representation and economic rights.

It is imperative to note that the situation in occupied Gilgit Baltistan is also not satisfactory because people of Gilgit Baltistan, despite the iron fist control of Pakistan since 1947 and systematic brain-washing of the people, there is a strong resentment against Islamabad.

Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) human rights activist and political commentator Amjad Ayub Mirza has strongly criticised what he described as a coordinated effort by Pakistan to militarise

the region through the proposed deployment of 14,000 additional security personnel. Mirza’s remarks came in response to a circular reportedly issued on June 04, 2026, by the Inspector General of Police of PoJK to the Chief Secretary of the PoJK administration.

The communication allegedly sought the urgent deployment of thousands of security personnel in the region under the pretext of maintaining peace and security. Condemning the move, Mirza said it exposed the “duplicity and colonial mindset” of the Pakistani establishment in PoJK. He argued that the

proposed deployment appeared to contradict assurances previously given by the Prime Minister of PoJK that peaceful public mobilisation would not be met with force or coercion.

“Only a day after concerns were raised regarding imminent external aggression in PoJK, Pakistan appears to be preparing the ground for coercive intervention against peaceful democratic mobilisation”, Mirza said. He further asserted that the people of PoJK had, over the past three years, fostered a culture of peaceful democratic engagement based on dialogue, civic participation and non-violent resistance. According to him, the introduction of a large security presence risks undermining this environment and could lead to unnecessary tensions.

“The people of PoJK have demonstrated remarkable restraint and political maturity. Any attempt to impose militarised control over a peaceful population would amount to political intimidation and collective punishment”, he said. Mirza also urged the Government of India to raise the matter at diplomatic and international forums. He maintained that India, which officially claims PoJK and Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan as integral parts of its territory, has a responsibility to monitor developments affecting the civil and political rights of residents living under Pakistani control.
