Mamata Retains Abhishek as TMC General Secretary, Overhauls Party Organisation in Bengal
Kolkata, June 2026 : Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo and former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday announced a major organisational reshuffle within the party, retaining her nephew and party MP Abhishek Banerjee as the national general secretary while introducing new leadership positions aimed at broadening decision-making within the organisation.
In a significant move, TMC Rajya Sabha MPs Derek O’Brien and Dola Sen have been appointed as deputy general secretaries. Political observers view the decision as an effort to create a more collective leadership structure, with key organisational decisions now expected to involve a wider group of senior leaders.
Alongside changes at the national level, the Trinamool Congress also carried out a comprehensive restructuring of its West Bengal state unit.
Veteran leader Subrata Bakshi, who had reportedly sought relief from organisational responsibilities due to age-related health concerns, has been relieved of his duties as state president. He has been succeeded by Chandrima Bhattacharya, a senior party leader and former Minister of State for Finance (Independent Charge) in the state government.
The party also appointed four vice-presidents for its West Bengal unit. These include Lok Sabha MP Sajda Ahmed, Rajya Sabha MP Mamata Bala Thakur, legislator Nay Bandopadhyay, and senior leader Swait Khondkar.
Several leaders have been elevated as state general secretaries, including Babar Ali, Pulak Roy, Ashima Patra, Aroop Biswas, and Rajib Banerjee.
The reconstituted state committee also includes senior leaders such as Jyotipriyo Mullick, Dr Rana Chatterjee, Bidesh Bose, Trinankur Bhattacharjee, Jaya Dutta, Tapas Chatterjee, Vasundhara Goswamy and Goutam Deb as executive members.
The party also announced changes in its frontal organisations. Actress-turned-politician and Lok Sabha MP Sayoni Ghosh has been appointed president of the TMC youth wing, while Madhurima Thakur will serve as its general secretary.
Lok Sabha MP Mala Roy has been named president of the women’s wing, while Priyanka Adhikary will oversee the student wing. Former West Bengal minister Moloy Ghatak has been appointed president of the party’s trade union wing.
Meanwhile, Becharam Manna and Purnendu Bose have been entrusted with responsibilities relating to the party’s farmers’ and agricultural workers’ wings.
The party also confirmed that Chandrima Bhattacharya, Kalyan Banerjee, Madan Mitra and Kunal Ghosh will continue to serve as official spokespersons.
The sweeping organisational overhaul comes as the Trinamool Congress prepares for future electoral battles while seeking to strengthen its structure at both the state and national levels.
