Trump Says Iran Nuclear Deal Nears Signing, Hormuz Strait to Reopen After Agreement

Washington, June 2026 : US President Donald Trump on Saturday announced that a new agreement between the United States and Iran is expected to be signed on Sunday, claiming that the proposed deal would permanently prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons and lead to the immediate reopening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz to international shipping.

In a social media post, Trump described the accord as a major diplomatic breakthrough and said the waterway, one of the world’s most important energy routes, would reopen as soon as the agreement takes effect.

“The deal is scheduled to get signed tomorrow, and immediately after it is signed, the Hormuz Strait is open to all,” Trump wrote.

The announcement comes after months of diplomatic engagement and heightened tensions in the Gulf region, raising hopes of greater stability in a region critical to global energy supplies.

Trump sharply contrasted the proposed agreement with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal, negotiated during former President Barack Obama’s administration.

Criticising the earlier accord, Trump argued that it had created a pathway for Iran to eventually acquire nuclear capabilities.

“Obama’s deal was an easy road to a nuclear weapon,” Trump wrote, adding that his administration’s agreement was designed to ensure that Iran would never possess such weapons.

“My agreement with Iran is the exact opposite — a wall to no nuclear weapon,” he said.

The US President further claimed that Iran no longer seeks nuclear weapons and that the proposed arrangement would prohibit the country from obtaining them through any means, including purchase, development or procurement.

The latest statement offers one of the strongest indications yet that negotiations between Washington and Tehran may be nearing completion. However, no official confirmation has yet been issued by Iranian authorities regarding the reported agreement.

Trump also emphasised that, unlike the Obama-era deal, the new agreement would not involve any direct financial transfers to Iran.

“Unlike Obama’s hundreds of billions of dollars in payments, no money will exchange hands,” he stated.

In another notable remark, Trump suggested that any remaining nuclear material in Iran would eventually be secured and destroyed under international supervision.

“At the appropriate time, when all is calm, we will retrieve and destroy the nuclear material,” he said, while referring to the capabilities of the US military.

The President also expressed optimism about future relations between Washington and Tehran, saying that the two countries could work together for regional stability.

“Our relationship with Iran is much different and better than previous administrations have had. We look forward to working with Iran and the entire Middle East long into the future,” Trump wrote.

At the same time, he warned that the United States retained alternative options should diplomacy fail.

“Hopefully, this process works out quickly and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative,” he added.

The reported breakthrough is being closely watched worldwide, particularly because the Strait of Hormuz handles a significant portion of global crude oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. For countries such as India, which rely heavily on Gulf energy imports, any easing of tensions in the region could help stabilise shipping routes, reduce freight costs and strengthen energy security.

The development also follows reports suggesting that regional stakeholders expect formalisation of a peace framework in the coming days, potentially marking a significant turning point in Middle East diplomacy.
