England aim fresh start against Ireland despite winning opener in Women’s T20 World Cup

Southampton, June 2026 : England women’s cricket team head into their second Group B fixture of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a clear message of reset and refocus, as they prepare to face Ireland at the Hampshire Bowl on Tuesday. Despite beginning their campaign in dominant fashion, England pacer Lauren Bell stressed that the team is treating every match as a fresh start.

England opened their tournament with a commanding 87-run victory over Sri Lanka in Birmingham on Friday, a match defined by a brilliant unbeaten century from Danni Wyatt-Hodge and a fluent 53 off 38 balls from Amy Jones. The emphatic win gave England early momentum in Group B of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, but the camp insists that past results will not influence their approach going forward.

Ireland, meanwhile, enter the contest looking to recover after a 49-run defeat to Scotland at Old Trafford in Manchester. The Irish side will be under pressure to respond quickly in a group that is already beginning to take shape.

Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Bell said England were satisfied with their opening performance but remain grounded in their approach. She emphasised that the focus is not on carrying forward momentum but on resetting mentally for each new challenge. According to her, the team’s mindset is to “start from zero” and replicate the intensity shown in their first match.

Bell explained that England are not engaging in discussions around net run rate or long-term scenario planning at this stage of the competition. Instead, the priority is maintaining a consistent brand of cricket and focusing on winning each game individually. She noted that the disappointment of missing out on key net run-rate advantages in previous tournaments has reinforced the importance of simplicity in approach.

The 25-year-old right-arm medium pacer also expressed satisfaction with her personal form during the current season. Bell highlighted her effectiveness in the powerplay overs, where she has been tasked with making early breakthroughs, as well as her responsibility at the death. She said she feels confident in her rhythm and clarity of role within the squad.

The match will be played at the Hampshire Bowl, a venue that is expected to offer a balanced contest between bat and ball. England, with home conditions in their favour, will aim to extend their winning start, while Ireland will look to challenge them early with disciplined bowling and aggressive intent.

Bell also addressed the challenge of preparing for opponents like Ireland, noting that while England do not frequently face them in major ICC tournaments, they rely on preparation, analysis and understanding of individual players. She added that her own preparation remains centred on her strengths rather than overcomplicating strategies, trusting her execution in key phases of the game.

As England look to consolidate their position in Group B, the message from within the camp is clear: every match begins at zero, regardless of previous results.

Team Maverick.
