PMO Officials Congratulate Modi on Becoming India’s Longest-Serving Elected Prime Minister

New Delhi, June 2026 : Officials of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) on Wednesday congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on achieving a historic milestone by becoming India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister in consecutive terms, marking another landmark moment in the country’s democratic journey.

The Prime Minister crossed the record of 4,399 days in office previously held by India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. The achievement comes as Modi completes 12 years at the helm of the Central government, having first assumed office in May 2014 and subsequently secured consecutive electoral mandates in 2019 and 2024.

In a post on X, the PMO extended its congratulations to the Prime Minister, highlighting his leadership over the past decade and more. The office stated that his tenure has been characterized by stability, transparency, and a strong commitment to good governance, inclusive development, and national progress.

“Officers of the Prime Minister’s Office congratulated PM Narendra Modi on becoming the longest-serving democratically elected Prime Minister of India in consecutive terms. Over the last twelve years, he has provided leadership characterised by stability, transparency and a steadfast commitment to good governance, inclusive development and national progress,” the PMO said.

Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Dr P.K. Mishra and Principal Secretary-2 Shaktikanta Das personally welcomed and congratulated PM Modi on the occasion.

For the purpose of this record, Nehru’s tenure is counted from 1952 onwards, following India’s first general elections. Although he served as head of the interim government between 1947 and 1952, that period is not included in the comparison. While former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi served for more than 14 years in office, her tenure was not continuous, making Modi the longest continuously serving elected Prime Minister in India’s history.

Earlier in the day, the Union Cabinet also passed a special resolution praising Prime Minister Modi for reaching the historic milestone. Cabinet ministers greeted him with a standing ovation during the meeting, acknowledging his contribution to governance and national development.

The resolution described the occasion as a reflection of India’s democratic strength and the trust placed by citizens in a leader guided by the principle of “Nation First.” It noted that the milestone represents the power of public participation and the unprecedented support received by the Prime Minister through successive electoral victories.

An official statement further observed that PM Modi is now approaching nearly 25 years of continuous service as the head of a government, including his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and Prime Minister of India. It also highlighted that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a third consecutive mandate under his leadership, a feat achieved after more than six decades in Indian politics.

The Modi government’s tenure has been marked by several major infrastructure and nation-building initiatives, including the new Parliament building, Central Vista redevelopment, Kartavya Path, Vande Bharat trains, the Statue of Unity, INS Vikrant, the Kashmir rail link, Noida International Airport, the Namo Bharat Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), and the Ganga Expressway.
