England Fight Back as India Collapse After Strong Start on Opening Day at Lord’s
London, July 2026 : England produced a sensational fightback with the ball to bowl India out for 285 on the opening day of the historic one-off women’s Test at Lord’s on Friday, recovering brilliantly after the visitors appeared set for a commanding first-innings total.
India looked firmly in control at 190/3, with three batters registering half-centuries, but an extraordinary collapse saw them lose their final seven wickets for just 95 runs, handing the momentum to the hosts at the iconic venue.
England’s experienced left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone and debutant Mady Villiers played starring roles in the dramatic turnaround, combining to claim five wickets and expose India’s fragile lower order. Ecclestone’s figures of 3/68 were particularly significant as they helped her become England’s highest wicket-taker across all international formats, surpassing the previous record held by Katherine Sciver-Brunt.
India resumed the final session at 202/5, hoping that all-rounder Deepti Sharma and wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh could guide the visitors beyond the 300-run mark. However, England struck an early blow when pacer Lauren Filer dismissed Richa for 13.
Attempting to attack a short-pitched delivery, Richa top-edged her shot and was comfortably caught at fine leg, leaving India under increasing pressure.
With wickets falling around her, Deepti Sharma produced a determined and mature innings to keep India’s hopes alive. Displaying excellent temperament, she used the sweep shot effectively against England’s spin attack and rotated the strike intelligently while punishing loose deliveries.
Her fighting knock of 57 from 87 balls, which included seven boundaries, brought up a well-deserved half-century off just 70 deliveries. Deepti looked capable of steering India towards a competitive total, but the lower-order batters failed to provide meaningful support.
Making an impressive debut, Mady Villiers further strengthened England’s grip on the contest by trapping Sneh Rana (13) leg before wicket, ending a brief resistance and opening the door for the hosts to wrap up the innings.
Ecclestone then took complete control.
The left-arm spinner dismissed Sayali Satghare (1) lbw before ending Deepti’s courageous innings when she was caught at mid-wicket while trying to accelerate the scoring. Ecclestone eventually completed the innings by clean bowling Kranti Gaud (1), receiving a standing ovation from the 10,768 spectators at Lord’s after becoming England’s all-time leading international wicket-taker.
Earlier in the day, India had laid a solid foundation through their experienced top order. Opener Smriti Mandhana once again led the batting effort with a fluent 83, playing several elegant strokes during her innings before falling short of what would have been a memorable century at the Home of Cricket.
Captain Harmanpreet Kaur contributed an important 58, while Deepti’s resilient half-century ensured three Indian batters crossed the fifty-run mark. Despite those contributions, India were unable to capitalize on their promising position after England’s disciplined bowling attack seized control in the final session.
Alongside Ecclestone and Villiers, England received valuable support from pace bowler Issy Wong, who claimed 2/41, while Lauren Filer’s pace created pressure during the closing stages.
Although India will be disappointed after failing to convert a dominant position into a bigger total, their bowlers will now look to make early inroads when England begin their first innings.
With 285 on the board, the match remains finely balanced, but England will believe their remarkable late-session comeback has given them a slight advantage heading into Day Two of the landmark Test at Lord’s.
Brief Scores:
India 285 all out in 74.5 overs (Smriti Mandhana 83, Harmanpreet Kaur 58, Deepti Sharma 57; Sophie Ecclestone 3/68, Issy Wong 2/41).
