PM Modi Accorded Traditional Māori Welcome in Auckland, Strengthening India-New Zealand Ties

Auckland, July 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a grand ceremonial welcome at Government House in Auckland on Saturday as he began the final leg of his three-nation diplomatic tour. The reception, marked by a traditional Māori pōwhiri ceremony, highlighted New Zealand’s indigenous heritage while symbolising the growing warmth and strategic depth in relations between the two countries.

The visit is historic as it marks the first official trip by an Indian Prime Minister to New Zealand in four decades. It is expected to inject fresh momentum into bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, defence, education, innovation and people-to-people exchanges.

The traditional Māori pōwhiri, one of New Zealand’s highest forms of ceremonial welcome, reflected the country’s rich cultural traditions and its respect for distinguished international guests. The ceremony featured customary rituals that celebrated friendship, mutual respect and the strengthening of ties between the two nations.

Sharing details of the welcome, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal posted on social media that Prime Minister Modi was honoured with the traditional Māori ceremony, which reflects New Zealand’s rich indigenous heritage and cultural values.

Prime Minister Modi had arrived in Auckland on Friday evening after concluding his successful visit to Australia. In another significant diplomatic gesture, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon personally received him at the airport, underlining the importance Wellington attaches to the visit and the growing strategic partnership between the two countries.

Soon after his arrival, the Prime Minister interacted with members of the Indian diaspora, who greeted him with vibrant cultural performances showcasing India’s diverse traditions. The community reception featured colourful presentations representing Punjab and Tamil Nadu, along with a unique fusion of Carnatic and Hindustani classical music. A stirring rendition of Vande Mataram added to the celebratory atmosphere, reflecting the deep emotional connect of the Indian community with their homeland.

Expressing his appreciation, Prime Minister Modi said he was delighted to witness such a vibrant celebration of India’s cultural heritage in Auckland. He praised the Indian diaspora for preserving and promoting India’s traditions across generations while strengthening the enduring people-to-people relationship between India and New Zealand.

The Prime Minister also lauded the performance of the Naad Vocal Ensemble, noting that music possesses a unique ability to unite people beyond geographical boundaries. He remarked that the ensemble’s presentation beautifully reflected the warmth, friendship and shared values that define the India-New Zealand relationship.

During his stay in New Zealand, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold high-level discussions with Prime Minister Christopher Luxon to review the entire spectrum of bilateral ties. The talks are likely to focus on expanding cooperation in trade, investment, defence, education, technology, agriculture and renewable energy while exploring new avenues of collaboration.

The visit also seeks to further strengthen the historical and cultural bonds between the two nations, supported by a vibrant Indian diaspora that has emerged as an important bridge in fostering closer bilateral relations. With strong economic complementarities and shared democratic values, both countries are expected to use the visit to chart an ambitious roadmap for future cooperation across multiple sectors.
