PT Usha Hails India’s Record Boxing Show at CWG 2026, Calls It a ‘Golden Day’

Glasgow, Aug 2026 : Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha has lauded the Indian boxing contingent for its historic performance at the Commonwealth Games 2026, describing the country’s record medal haul as a “Golden day for India.”

Indian boxers scripted history on Saturday by winning seven gold medals at the Glasgow Games, marking the country’s highest-ever gold medal tally in boxing at a single Commonwealth Games edition. The remarkable performance also helped India make significant progress in the overall medal standings.

Expressing her pride at the achievements, Usha said watching Indian boxers win gold and hearing the national anthem being played at the victory podium was an emotional moment for her and the entire country.

“I am so happy; this is a golden day for India. Every time our boxers win a gold medal and the national anthem plays on the podium, it is a deeply proud moment for both me and our country,” Usha said.

She described the day’s performances as a major achievement for Indian sport and said the continued string of victories had made it difficult to fully express her emotions.

“Today is a big day for everyone, especially as we keep winning gold medals. Words cannot fully express how proud and elated I feel,” the IOA chief added.

India’s strong showing in Glasgow has also resulted in a dramatic rise in the overall medal table. According to Usha, the Indian contingent climbed from 10th place to fourth after securing nearly 40 medals despite competing in a relatively limited number of events.

“Even with a limited number of events, we managed to win 38 medals. We were 10th in the medal table, but now we have jumped to fourth place,” she said.

Usha credited the government’s continued support and encouragement for athletes, particularly highlighting Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s efforts to motivate sportspersons and ensure that they receive the necessary backing.

She said athletes are encouraged not only during major competitions but also after returning home, with the government working to address their requirements and strengthen India’s sporting ecosystem.

The former track and field star also emphasised that medals won by athletes are the result of collective efforts involving several professionals working behind the scenes.

“Behind every athlete, there is a dedicated team: coaches, doctors, physiotherapists, masseurs, and mental trainers,” Usha said.

She noted that the combined support of the government, the IOA and national sports federations has helped create an environment in which Indian athletes can perform at their best on the international stage.

The historic boxing performance in Glasgow is therefore being viewed not merely as a collection of medals, but as evidence of India’s growing strength and depth in international sport.
