Spain Seeks EU Emergency Meeting Over Ceuta Migrant Crisis

Madrid, Aug 2026 : Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has called for an extraordinary meeting of European Union interior ministers to coordinate a common response to the recent migrant crisis in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, while sharply criticising what he described as the “selfish” approach adopted by some EU member states.

In a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Sanchez expressed serious concern over the reactions of several European governments following the mass irregular crossings into Ceuta.

According to Sanchez, around 50,000 migrants entered Ceuta irregularly during the crisis. He said Spain managed to regain control of its border within 48 hours, provide humanitarian assistance and facilitate the return of almost all those who had entered illegally.

The Spanish Prime Minister said the government also prevented unauthorised onward movement of migrants towards mainland Europe. He credited close cooperation with Moroccan authorities and support from other EU members for helping Spain manage the unprecedented situation.

Sanchez also defended Spain’s broader migration policies, arguing that the country has maintained one of the EU’s most secure external borders while continuing to address migration through cooperation with neighbouring countries.

However, he criticised governments that, instead of expressing solidarity, had targeted Spain and called for the country to be temporarily excluded from the Schengen Area.

Sanchez described such reactions as being driven by “prejudice, fake news, ignorance, or political interest”, arguing that they run contrary to European law, humanitarian principles and the EU’s commitment to solidarity among member states.

“The European Union cannot afford this kind of selfish, polarising and unlawful reaction,” Sanchez said in his letter.

He urged the Irish Presidency of the EU to convene an emergency videoconference of interior ministers at the earliest opportunity. The proposed meeting would seek to establish a coordinated European response to similar migration emergencies and reaffirm that safeguarding the bloc’s external borders is a shared responsibility.

The appeal follows one of the most serious irregular migration incidents on Spain’s southern frontier in recent years. The Spanish government said at least 67 people died during the crisis, while more than 48,000 of the nearly 50,000 migrants who entered Ceuta returned to neighbouring Morocco within 48 hours.

The developments have renewed debate within the EU over migration management, border security and the distribution of responsibility among member states. Sanchez’s call for an emergency meeting reflects Madrid’s push for a unified European strategy rather than individual countries responding separately to sudden migration pressures.

Spain has also stressed the importance of continued cooperation with Morocco, given the North African country’s role in managing migration routes towards Ceuta and other Spanish territories.

The Spanish government is expected to use the proposed EU meeting to press for greater coordination, solidarity and support for countries situated on the bloc’s external borders, particularly those facing sudden surges in irregular arrivals.
