Rahul Gandhi Visits Chennai to Strengthen Congress Organisation in Tamil Nadu

Chennai, Aug 2026 : Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi arrived in Chennai on Saturday to attend the concluding session of a training camp for Tamil Nadu Congress district presidents near Mamallapuram, with the party focusing on strengthening its grassroots organisation and preparing for future political challenges in the state.

Gandhi arrived from New Delhi and received a warm welcome from senior Congress leaders and party workers at Chennai airport. Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president Manickam Tagore, Minister P. Viswanathan and other senior functionaries were present to receive him.

From the airport, Gandhi travelled along the East Coast Road to Mamallapuram, where the Tamil Nadu Congress has been conducting the training programme for district-level leaders since July 23. The camp, being held at a beach resort, has brought together 74 District Congress Committee presidents from across the state.

Gandhi is scheduled to participate in the final day of the programme and interact with the district presidents on organisational matters and the political situation in Tamil Nadu. According to party sources, the interaction will be held behind closed doors, with the media not being allowed to attend.

The Congress leader is expected to emphasise strengthening the party structure from the district level down to individual booths, improving coordination among workers and expanding the party’s grassroots presence. Discussions are also likely to focus on strategies for addressing emerging political challenges and increasing public engagement.

The programme assumes significance as the Congress seeks to consolidate its position in Tamil Nadu after becoming part of the state government. The party’s return to power-sharing in the state comes nearly six decades after it lost power in 1967.

Gandhi is also expected to meet family members of the district Congress presidents participating in the training programme. Congress Ministers S. Rajesh Kumar and P. Viswanathan, along with senior state leaders and office-bearers, are expected to participate in the concluding sessions.

Later in the day, Gandhi is scheduled to hold a separate meeting with key Congress functionaries at around 4 p.m. The meeting is likely to review the party’s organisational preparedness and discuss its future political strategy in Tamil Nadu.

Party leaders have also made arrangements for Gandhi to meet the parents of four students from Coimbatore and Salem who died in incidents linked to the NEET examination.

After completing his engagements in Tamil Nadu, Gandhi is expected to return to Chennai and leave for New Delhi on an evening flight around 7 p.m.

The visit comes as the Tamil Nadu Congress seeks to strengthen its organisational machinery and build a more effective grassroots network across the state.
