PM Modi Appeals for Forgiveness, Guidance for Youth Over Jantar Mantar Abuse

New Delhi, Aug 2026 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday appealed for compassion and guidance for youngsters involved in the recent incident at Jantar Mantar, saying that mistakes made during childhood should be treated as an opportunity for correction rather than permanent condemnation.

In a fresh video message shared on his official Instagram account, Modi said he felt the need to speak directly to young people following the incident in which some youngsters allegedly used abusive and objectionable language during a protest at Jantar Mantar.

The Prime Minister said the language used was unacceptable and deeply disturbing, particularly as his late mother was also subjected to offensive remarks. He acknowledged the anger and disappointment expressed by people across society, saying the incident had caused a cultural shock and raised questions about the behaviour of young girls.

However, Modi urged people not to respond to the incident solely through punishment or legal action. He described the youngsters involved as misguided and said society’s responsibility was to help them understand their mistake and find the right path.

“Childhood gives us the opportunity to correct our mistakes,” Modi said, emphasising that making mistakes is part of growing up. He added that merely punishing the youngsters, involving them in prolonged court proceedings or subjecting them to social harassment would not necessarily resolve the underlying issue.

The Prime Minister said he was prepared to forgive the youngsters and appealed to society to accept his approach. He stressed that his primary concern was to ensure that they were guided properly rather than pushed further towards alienation.

Using an analogy to underline his message, Modi said that people sometimes accidentally bite their tongues with their teeth, causing pain and bleeding, but they do not break their teeth because both the tongue and teeth are part of the same body.

“These children are ours, too, and it is our responsibility to guide them,” he said.

Modi acknowledged that guiding someone who has gone astray is not easy, but maintained that society cannot shy away from that responsibility. He called for an approach that combines accountability with empathy and creates an opportunity for young people to learn from their mistakes.

The video message comes amid a wider debate over the conduct and language used during the Jantar Mantar protest. The incident had triggered strong reactions, with many questioning the nature of the remarks made against the Prime Minister and his family.

By advocating forgiveness and reform, Modi sought to steer the debate away from retribution and towards rehabilitation. He said young people who make serious mistakes should not be defined permanently by those actions and can still be encouraged to change through patience, understanding and positive guidance.
