Argentina May Face FIFA Action Over Falklands Banner Celebration
Atlanta, July 2026 : Argentina could face disciplinary proceedings from FIFA after its players displayed a banner supporting the country’s claim over the Falkland Islands during celebrations following their dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the FIFA World Cup 2026 semi-final.
Moments after sealing their place in the World Cup final with a remarkable late comeback, several Argentine players posed with a banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” (“The Falklands are Argentine”) before leaving it on the pitch. The gesture has sparked controversy because the Falkland Islands remain the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom.
The reigning world champions overturned a one-goal deficit with late strikes from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez, ending England’s hopes of reaching the final. However, the post-match celebrations quickly drew attention away from the football and toward the politically sensitive message displayed by the players.
The Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Malvinas, are a British Overseas Territory located in the South Atlantic Ocean, off the Argentine coast. Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the islands, a dispute that culminated in the 1982 Falklands War after Argentina’s military government invaded the territory. Britain regained control after a 74-day conflict that claimed the lives of 907 military personnel from both sides. Since then, the sovereignty issue has remained a sensitive political and diplomatic matter.
Argentina’s Vice President Victoria Villarruel openly supported the players’ actions. In a post on X following the victory, she wrote, “The Falklands are Argentine! They banned bringing them to the stadium and forgot that we carry them in our blood and our hearts.”
Before the high-profile semi-final, Villarruel had also made emotionally charged remarks linking the match to the historical dispute.
“This isn’t just another match. Against the English, it’s always something more. It’s the Malvinas, it’s Diego, it’s Leo’s last one, and it’s putting the brakes on the invaders. Go Argentina! Because until our last breath, we’re going to claim what’s ours!” she had said.
Given the historical tensions between the two nations, security around the semi-final had been significantly strengthened.
This is not the first time Argentina’s football team has faced scrutiny over the issue. Following their Round of 16 victory over Egypt earlier in the tournament, Argentine players were also heard singing chants referencing the Falklands as well as football legends Diego Maradona and Lionel Messi.
FIFA has previously taken action over similar incidents. In 2014, the Argentine Football Association was fined £20,000 after players displayed an identical banner reading “Las Malvinas son Argentinas” before an international friendly against Slovenia.
With FIFA regulations prohibiting political messages at official tournaments, the governing body is expected to review the latest incident, which could result in disciplinary measures against the Argentine Football Association or the national team.
