Sanjay Singh Alleges Crackdown on Sonam Wangchuk’s Parliament March

New Delhi, July 2026: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has strongly criticised the forcible removal of noted educationist Sonam Wangchuk, who had been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past 21 days, and his subsequent admission to a hospital. The party also condemned the police action against protesting youths at Jantar Mantar.

Senior AAP leader and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the Narendra Modi-led government was “frightened” by Wangchuk’s call for a peaceful march to Parliament and had attempted to crush the movement.

Addressing a press conference, Sanjay Singh said the government deployed police at Jantar Mantar early in the morning, ordered a lathi charge on protesting youths, and forcibly shifted Sonam Wangchuk to a hospital in an effort to derail the proposed march to Parliament scheduled for July 20.

He claimed that thousands of youths, members of the public, and MPs from various political parties were expected to participate in the peaceful march from Jantar Mantar to Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has realised that Sonam Wangchuk’s voice is becoming a powerful national movement. That is why the government wants to suppress it before it gathers further momentum,” Singh alleged.

Sanjay Singh said Wangchuk, 59, had been on an indefinite fast for 21 days to highlight the concerns of millions of young people allegedly affected by repeated examination paper leaks across the country.

“He has risked his life to raise the voice of crores of students whose futures have been ruined by 93 paper leak incidents. Yet, during these 21 days, the Prime Minister neither spoke to him nor even appealed to him to end his fast. Not a single representative of the government came forward to understand why he was prepared to sacrifice his life,” Singh said.

According to the AAP leader, police personnel suddenly surrounded Jantar Mantar on Saturday and used force against protesters before removing Wangchuk from the protest site.

Singh alleged that the action was taken because Wangchuk had appealed to citizens, youths, Members of Parliament, and legislators to participate in a peaceful march to Parliament on July 20.

“The Prime Minister knew this movement was going to become much bigger. That is why the Delhi Police Commissioner was changed and an officer was appointed who would ensure Sonam Wangchuk could be detained,” Singh claimed. He also alleged that activist Abhijeet Dipke had been detained.

Criticising the Centre, Singh said the government was displaying excessive arrogance by responding to every protest with police force.

“It is not healthy for a democracy to respond to every movement with lathi charges, bullets or tear gas. Whether it is the farmers’ movement, the youth movement or protests by women, every democratic voice is being suppressed,” he said.

He further warned that the same young people facing police action today would one day remove the present government from power.

Appealing to the country’s youth, Singh urged them to stand firmly with Sonam Wangchuk and ensure that the movement for students’ rights and accountability does not lose momentum.
