Tamil Nadu to Present Revised 2026-27 Budget on August 5, First Full Fiscal Roadmap of TVK Government
Chennai, July 2026 : The Tamil Nadu government will present its revised Budget for the 2026-27 financial year in the State Assembly on August 5, marking the first full-fledged financial roadmap of the TVK government since it assumed office earlier this year.
Assembly Speaker J.C.D. Prabhakar announced on Tuesday that Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson will table the revised Budget at 10 a.m. on August 5, while the Agriculture Budget will be presented the following day, August 6, by Agriculture Minister Vinoth.
The revised Budget is expected to outline the government’s fiscal priorities, expenditure plans, and policy initiatives for the remainder of the financial year. It will also provide insight into how the new administration intends to address the state’s financial challenges while balancing welfare commitments and developmental needs.
The Budget assumes added significance as it follows the interim Budget presented by the previous DMK government ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. That interim Budget projected revenue receipts of ₹3.44 lakh crore against revenue expenditure of ₹3.93 lakh crore, resulting in an estimated revenue deficit of ₹48,697 crore. It also projected a fiscal deficit of ₹1.22 lakh crore for the financial year.
However, after taking office, the TVK government released a White Paper on Tamil Nadu’s finances, presenting a more concerning assessment of the state’s fiscal health. The report stated that the state’s outstanding debt had climbed to ₹13.18 lakh crore, highlighting mounting financial pressures on the exchequer.
According to the White Paper, the revenue deficit is likely to rise substantially from the earlier estimate, reaching around ₹90,500 crore, while the fiscal deficit could increase to nearly ₹1.64 lakh crore. The report also noted that Tamil Nadu’s maximum borrowing capacity stands at approximately ₹1.52 lakh crore, leaving a potential funding shortfall of nearly ₹11,600 crore.
Against this backdrop, the revised Budget is expected to detail the government’s strategy for narrowing the fiscal gap while continuing to fund key welfare schemes, infrastructure projects, and capital expenditure. Economists and industry stakeholders will closely watch how the government plans to manage rising debt without compromising on economic growth and public investment.
The Budget is also expected to announce measures aimed at enhancing revenue mobilisation, improving fiscal discipline, and supporting priority sectors such as agriculture, industry, education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
In addition, observers anticipate announcements related to taxation, investment promotion, and sector-specific allocations that will shape Tamil Nadu’s economic agenda for the remainder of the financial year. The revised Budget is likely to serve as a key indicator of the TVK government’s long-term financial strategy and its approach to addressing the state’s fiscal challenges while pursuing inclusive development.
