IAF to Convert Six Airbus A321 Aircraft into Advanced AEW&C Platforms, Boosting Airborne Surveillance

New Delhi, July 2026 : The Indian Air Force (IAF) is set to significantly enhance its airborne surveillance and battle management capabilities with the conversion of six Airbus A321 aircraft into advanced Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) Mk-II platforms. The ambitious programme marks a major leap in India’s indigenous defence capabilities and will provide the Air Force with aircraft capable of conducting longer-duration surveillance missions while strengthening the country’s air defence network.

The Ministry of Defence has confirmed that the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed two major contracts with industry partners to execute the project, which is expected to substantially improve India’s ability to detect, monitor and respond to aerial and ground-based threats over extended distances.

Unlike the smaller Embraer aircraft currently used for India’s indigenous AEW&C systems, the larger Airbus A321 platforms will offer significantly greater endurance, increased payload capacity and enhanced operational flexibility. Their larger airframe will also allow the integration of more sophisticated mission systems and surveillance equipment, enabling the aircraft to remain airborne for longer periods while covering much larger operational areas.

Often described as “flying command centres,” AEW&C aircraft play a vital role in modern warfare by detecting hostile aircraft, missiles and ground-based threats at long ranges. Equipped with advanced radar and communication systems, they relay real-time battlefield information to fighter pilots, air defence units and command headquarters, greatly improving situational awareness and enabling faster operational decisions.

India first achieved indigenous AEW&C capability through DRDO’s earlier programme based on Embraer aircraft, a milestone that demonstrated the country’s growing expertise in developing advanced airborne surveillance systems. The new Airbus-based AEW&C Mk-II programme represents the next phase of that capability, offering significantly enhanced performance.

The Airbus A321 aircraft being modified for the project were acquired by the Indian Air Force from Air India before the airline’s privatisation. Instead of procuring entirely new aircraft, the government has opted to repurpose these existing platforms, making the programme both cost-effective and strategically efficient.

As part of the initiative, DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) has signed a contract with AI Engineering Services Limited (AIESL) in New Delhi to convert the six commercial Airbus A321 aircraft into a basic military configuration. This structural and systems modification forms the foundation of the AEW&C Mk-II programme and will prepare the aircraft for the installation of advanced surveillance equipment.

In a parallel development, DRDO has signed another contract with Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited (ADSTL), which has been selected as the Development-cum-Production Partner for the aircraft’s sophisticated surveillance systems. The partnership is expected to accelerate the integration of cutting-edge indigenous technologies while supporting the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative in defence manufacturing.

Under the programme, DRDO and CABS will equip the aircraft with advanced airborne surveillance radars, secure communication systems, improved situational awareness capabilities and enhanced command-and-control infrastructure. These technologies will enable the Air Force to monitor vast airspaces, detect multiple threats simultaneously and coordinate defensive operations with greater precision.

The larger Airbus platforms will also provide improved endurance, allowing surveillance missions to continue for significantly longer durations than current systems. This enhanced capability is expected to strengthen India’s preparedness across multiple operational theatres and improve the country’s ability to monitor evolving security challenges along its borders and maritime regions.

Following the structural modifications, CABS and ADSTL will jointly integrate the mission systems before conducting extensive flight trials in collaboration with the Indian Air Force. The aircraft will undergo rigorous testing to obtain certification from the Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) and the Directorate General of Aeronautical Quality Assurance (DGAQA), ensuring they meet stringent military airworthiness and operational standards before entering service.

The agreements were formally signed by the Director of CABS with the Chief Executive Officer of AI Engineering Services Limited and the Head of Airborne Platforms at Adani Defence Systems and Technologies Limited. The ceremony was attended by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, who also serves as Secretary of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO, underscoring the strategic significance of the programme.

The AEW&C Mk-II initiative represents one of India’s most important indigenous airborne surveillance projects to date. By combining the expertise of DRDO, CABS, AIESL and Adani Defence, the programme highlights the growing collaboration between government research organisations and private industry in developing advanced defence technologies. Once inducted, the six Airbus A321-based AEW&C aircraft are expected to substantially enhance the Indian Air Force’s ability to maintain persistent aerial surveillance, strengthen command-and-control operations and improve national air defence capabilities for future security challenges.
