Iran Says It Will Push US to Honour Peace MoU Amid Rising Tensions

Tehran, Aug 2026 : Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has said Tehran must “compel” the United States to remain committed to a peace memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between the two countries, describing the agreement as a potentially important pillar of Iran’s future foreign relations.

In a post on social media platform X, Pezeshkian said members of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council were broadly aligned on the MoU and indicated that the agreement could become a focal point for Tehran’s diplomatic engagements.

“We must strive to compel the enemy to adhere to what it has signed,” Pezeshkian said, adding that implementation of the MoU would contribute to improving the security of Iran, the wider region and its allies.

His comments come amid renewed tensions between Tehran and Washington and uncertainty over the future of diplomatic efforts between the two countries.

Iran’s Acting Defence Minister Seyed Majid Ebn Al-Reza also issued a warning on Sunday, saying Tehran considers every threat from an “enemy” to be serious and cannot afford to dismiss such warnings as psychological warfare.

“We will neither be surprised nor remain passive,” Al-Reza said in a post on X. He added that Iran would use perceived threats to increase its preparedness, strengthen deterrence and further develop its military capabilities.

His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington had agreed to postpone fresh attacks against Iran. Trump said the United States remained prepared to take military action but had decided to give diplomatic efforts an opportunity.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said the US was “locked and loaded” and ready to act against Iran, while claiming that Tehran and other Middle Eastern countries had requested a pause in military action because the framework of a potential agreement had been established.

Trump said the proposed understanding would include the “Immediate, Complete, and Total” opening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures aimed at ending Iran’s nuclear threat.

Earlier reports in US media had suggested that American and Israeli strikes against Iranian energy infrastructure could begin over the weekend, adding to concerns that the confrontation could escalate further.

The MoU between Iran and the United States was signed on June 18, with the two countries scheduled to conduct negotiations over a 60-day period aimed at reaching a final agreement. However, the future of those talks has become uncertain following the latest escalation.

The United States launched multiple waves of strikes against Iranian targets last month, saying the operations were intended to degrade Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping and followed Iranian attacks on vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US military bases and facilities across the region.

Against this backdrop, Pezeshkian’s call for Washington to honour the MoU signals Tehran’s continued emphasis on diplomacy, even as Iranian officials stress military preparedness in response to potential threats.
