Iran-Oman Talks on Strait of Hormuz Near Final Stage: Araghchi

Tehran, Aug 2026 : Negotiations between Iran and Oman concerning the Strait of Hormuz have reached their final stages, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi said on Sunday, as Tehran continues discussions over the future of navigation through the strategically important waterway.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting, Araghchi said the talks had made significant progress and were moving towards finalisation, according to Iran’s official news agency IRNA.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei provided further details of the negotiations during an interview with state-run IRIB TV. He clarified that any agreement between Tehran and Muscat should not be interpreted simply as a decision concerning the reopening or continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Instead, Baghaei said the two sides are working on arrangements for establishing a “new route” within the strait under a traffic separation scheme. According to the spokesman, the proposed arrangement is intended to safeguard the sovereign rights of both countries while protecting Iran’s national interests and security concerns.

The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important maritime passage through which a significant volume of global energy supplies traditionally moves. Any disruption or changes to navigation arrangements in the waterway can therefore have wider implications for regional security and international trade.

The latest diplomatic developments come against a backdrop of heightened tensions involving Iran and the United States.

Iran’s Acting Defence Minister Seyed Majid Ebn Al-Reza said on Sunday that Tehran regards every threat from an “enemy” as serious and cannot afford to dismiss such warnings as psychological warfare.

“We will neither be surprised nor remain passive,” Al-Reza said in a post on social media platform X. He added that Iran would use threats as a basis to strengthen military preparedness, deterrence capabilities and national power.

His remarks followed US President Donald Trump’s announcement that Washington had agreed to postpone fresh attacks against Iran, amid diplomatic efforts to ease tensions.

Tehran had tightened its control over the Strait of Hormuz after the United States and Israel launched joint strikes against Iran on February 28, according to the report.

The United States subsequently conducted multiple waves of strikes against Iranian targets, saying the operations were carried out in response to Iranian attacks on vessels in the strait and were aimed at reducing Tehran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping.

Iran responded with missile and drone attacks against US military bases and facilities in the region.

Against this backdrop, the Iran-Oman negotiations represent an effort to establish a new framework for maritime movement while addressing Tehran’s security and sovereignty concerns. The outcome of the talks could have wider implications for navigation, regional stability and international shipping through one of the world’s most strategically significant waterways.
