Amitabh Bachchan Thanks Fans on His ‘Rebirth Day’, Says Their Prayers Made His Second Life Possible
Mumbai, Aug 2026 : Megastar Amitabh Bachchan expressed heartfelt gratitude to his fans on August 2, a date he has long regarded as his “rebirth day” following the near-fatal accident he suffered while shooting for the film Coolie in 1982.
The veteran actor, who turned 83 earlier this year, thanked his millions of admirers for their prayers, blessings and affection, which he credited with helping him survive one of the most difficult phases of his life. In a heartfelt message shared on his blog, Bachchan said he was overwhelmed by the messages, calls and greetings he received from fans.
The actor acknowledged that it would be impossible to respond personally to everyone who had reached out to him. Expressing his appreciation, he wrote that the affection and kindness shown by his supporters had been immense and beyond measure.
Bachchan then shared a deeply emotional message in Hindi, reflecting on the significance of August 2 and the role that his fans’ prayers played in his recovery.
He said that although very few people knew the significance of August 2, he remained deeply grateful to everyone who had remembered the date and sent him their wishes. He said their prayers had made it possible for him to be alive and communicate his gratitude to them through his blog.
Reflecting on the passage of time, the actor wrote, “Samay bada balwaan hota hai” — meaning, “Time is very powerful.” He added that the present moment had been made possible because of the prayers of his admirers.
Bachchan also revealed that he was preparing to return to work, saying it was time for the first day of recording for Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC). With his characteristic determination, he said he was heading towards another challenge with the blessings and affection of his fans.
The emotional significance of the day goes back more than four decades to the sets of Coolie, directed by Manmohan Desai. In 1982, Bachchan was filming an action sequence with actor Puneet Issar when an accident left him critically injured.
During the fight sequence, Bachchan reportedly mistimed a jump and suffered a severe abdominal injury after hitting the edge of a table. The impact resulted in serious internal injuries and extensive bleeding, leaving the actor in a critical condition.
He underwent emergency surgery and remained seriously ill for several days. Bachchan later recalled that he was clinically dead for a brief period before doctors were able to revive him on August 2. The date subsequently became deeply significant to him and his supporters, who came to regard it as his “rebirth day.”
The accident sent shockwaves across India, where Bachchan was already one of the country’s biggest film stars. Millions of fans reportedly prayed for his recovery, with people gathering outside the hospital and offering prayers at temples, mosques, churches and gurudwaras.
His prolonged treatment and rehabilitation eventually enabled him to return to the sets and complete Coolie. Released in 1983, the film went on to become a major commercial success, further cementing Bachchan’s legendary status in Indian cinema.
The actor’s August 2 message once again highlighted the extraordinary bond he shares with his audience. For Bachchan, the day is not merely a personal milestone but a reminder of the immense public support that surrounded him during the most difficult period of his life.
Earlier on Sunday, hundreds of admirers gathered outside his Mumbai residence, Jalsa, as part of his customary Sunday interaction with fans. Many arrived carrying flower garlands, bouquets, handwritten letters and greeting cards.
As Bachchan prepares for another day of work, his message reflected both gratitude and resilience — qualities that have remained central to his extraordinary journey in Indian cinema.
