Deadly Floods Devastate Nepal’s Capital as Monsoon Rains Persist

Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered severe flooding in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, resulting in the deaths of at least 32 people, with 12 others reported missing, authorities said on Saturday. The rains, which began on Friday night, are expected to continue throughout the weekend. According to Nepal Police spokesperson Bishwo Adhikari, 17 people have been injured, and a total of 1,053 individuals have been rescued from affected areas. Police forces nationwide have been mobilized to assist in rescue efforts.

The government had previously issued flood warnings across the Himalayan nation, predicting significant rainfall. As a precaution, buses were banned from traveling on highways at night, and cars were advised to stay off the roads. Security forces were placed on high alert to respond to any emergency situations.

Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak addressed the media, confirming reports of damage in other parts of the country as well. However, officials are still in the process of gathering detailed information. “The government’s immediate focus is on rescuing people and providing aid to those affected,” Lekhak stated.

In Kathmandu, swollen rivers overflowed, flooding parts of the city and forcing residents to evacuate to the upper floors of their homes. The southern part of the city has been particularly hard hit, with extensive flooding across a large area. In one instance, an army helicopter was deployed to rescue four individuals trapped in their homes.

Much of Kathmandu experienced power and internet outages due to the flood damage. Additionally, there have been reports of landslides and flooding in other regions of Nepal. The ongoing monsoon season, which began in June, is expected to last until mid-September, bringing continued heavy rainfall to the region.
