Bangladesh Receives Egg Shipment from India Amidst Soaring Prices

Bangladesh recently received a shipment of 2.31 lakh eggs from India through the Benapole land port on Saturday night, as part of ongoing efforts to address a sharp increase in egg prices. Over the past week, the cost of eggs surged to 200 taka per dozen in Dhaka and other regions, causing significant hardship for low- and middle-income households. As prices soared, many families were forced to reduce their consumption of this essential protein source.

In response to the crisis, the Bangladeshi government authorized the phased import of 4.5 crore eggs to stabilize the market and make eggs more accessible to the public. According to the United News of Bangladesh (UNB), additional shipments from India are expected, with 90 lakh more eggs anticipated by November. This measure aims to increase the egg supply and help alleviate the financial strain on consumers.

To further reduce the burden on the population, the National Board of Revenue (NBR) took a significant step by slashing the import duty on eggs from 25 percent to 5 percent. The new rate, which came into effect on Thursday, is expected to lower the cost of importing eggs by approximately 13.8 taka per dozen. The reduction in import duty is intended to make eggs more affordable and ease the financial pressure on households struggling with rising food costs.

The NBR emphasized that this move is part of the government’s broader efforts to stabilize the market and provide relief to consumers. By reducing import costs, the authorities hope to curb the ongoing price surge and ensure that eggs remain an accessible source of nutrition for the public.

The combination of increased imports and reduced import duties reflects Bangladesh’s strategy to tackle the egg price crisis. As the situation continues to develop, further measures may be necessary to ensure market stability and prevent future shortages of essential food items.
