New Delhi: Indian men’s hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh lauded the Indian women’s hockey team for clinching the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 title in Rajgir, Bihar. The Indian women secured their victory with a narrow 1-0 win over China in a closely contested final held at the Rajgir Hockey Stadium on Wednesday.
The match saw both teams performing at their peak in the first half, which ended goalless. However, India elevated their game in the second half, breaking the deadlock when Deepika scored the decisive goal in the 31st minute. Her remarkable effort ensured India successfully defended their title, marking their third Asian Champions Trophy victory.
Harmanpreet expressed his admiration for the team’s stellar performance on social media platform X. He congratulated the team and extended special appreciation to Deepika for her crucial goal. “Congratulations to the Indian women’s hockey team for winning the Women’s Asian Champions Trophy 2024 in Rajgir and taking their title tally to three! Hats off to young captain Salima Tete and coach Harender Singh for their brilliant work. Deepika, from one drag flicker to another, you’re destined for greatness,” he wrote.
The final match showcased high-intensity gameplay with India and China both creating multiple circle entries. Despite several attempts, China couldn’t capitalize on their penalty corners, thanks to India’s formidable defense and a key save by goalkeeper Bichu Devi. India’s resilience thwarted China’s equalizing efforts, sealing their triumph.
