Mahayuti Triumphs as MVA Crumbles Below 50 Seats in Maharashtra
The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has faced a significant setback in the Maharashtra Assembly Elections 2024, held on November 20 in a single phase. The latest trends reveal a dramatic decline, with the Congress-Shiv Sena (UBT)-NCP (SP) alliance slipping below the 50-seat mark after earlier projections had shown them leading in 55 seats. In stark contrast, the Grand Alliance, also known as the Mahayuti, has surged ahead with a commanding lead of 233 seats. The Election Commission of India (ECI) declared the results on November 23, confirming the dominant performance of the ruling coalition.
This poor performance by the MVA has cast doubts over the political futures of leaders like Sharad Pawar and Uddhav Thackeray. Congress, too, has delivered underwhelming results, leading in just 16 constituencies. Shiv Sena (UBT) is ahead in 20 seats, while NCP (SP) is trailing significantly, leading in only 10 seats. Collectively, the three parties have managed to secure a mere 49 seats. In contrast, the Mahayuti alliance, led by the BJP, has cemented an overwhelming majority. Out of its 233 seats, the BJP holds 133, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) has 54, and NCP (Ajit Pawar) claims 41.
The stark difference between the two alliances is evident, with MVA’s total tally failing to match even the number of seats secured by the Shiv Sena’s Eknath Shinde faction. As the vote counting nears completion, it seems highly unlikely for the MVA to surpass the 50-seat threshold, solidifying the Mahayuti’s triumph and further weakening the MVA’s political standing in Maharashtra.
