Bangladesh: Lawyer of Jailed Hindu Leader Chinmoy Krishna Das Attacked, Admitted to ICU
Violence against minority Hindus continues to rise in Bangladesh, with the recent fatal attack on lawyer Raman Roy highlighting the ongoing tensions. Roy, who represents Chinmoy Krishna Das Prabhu, a prominent Hindu religious leader and figure within the ISKCON movement, was brutally attacked at his home by Islamic fundamentalists. The lawyer sustained serious injuries and is currently fighting for his life in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The information was shared on social media by Radharaman Das, a spokesperson for ISKCON Kolkata, who expressed concern over Roy’s condition.
According to Radharaman Das, Roy’s only “flaw” was his legal defense of Chinmoy Krishna Das in court. He claimed that Islamic extremists ransacked Roy’s house and attacked him viciously, leaving him hospitalized. Chinmoy Krishna Das, a key member of ISKCON Bangladesh, has been embroiled in controversy after leading a rally against the oppression of Hindus in the Rangpur district. Following this, he was charged with sedition and arrested in Dhaka. His bail plea was rejected by a Dhaka court on November 26, and his case was scheduled for another hearing on Tuesday.
Chinmoy Krishna Das had earlier participated in a major rally on October 25 organized by the Sanatan Jagran Manch at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong, where he made a speech advocating for the rights of Hindus. During the rally, a saffron flag inscribed with ‘Aami Sanatani’ was raised at the Independence Pillar, which led to the filing of a sedition case by BNP party leader Feroze Khan. The case accused the rally’s organizers, including Chinmoy Krishna Das, of desecrating the national flag, which ultimately resulted in his arrest.
The attacks on Hindus and the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das have sparked widespread protests within the Hindu community, both in Bangladesh and abroad. People have been rallying in various countries, including India, demanding action against the growing oppression. On Monday, protests were held in New Delhi, urging the UN and the Indian government to take action. Additionally, ISKCON temples worldwide organized kirtans in solidarity with Chinmoy Krishna Das and to condemn the violence against Hindus in Bangladesh.
