Adani Places India’s Largest Order for 8 Tugs Under the Make in India Initiative Worth INR 450 Crore with Cochin Shipyard

  • Order for Eight 70-Tonne Bollard Pull Tugs to Expand Adani’s Fleet to 152

Ahmedabad : Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), India’s largest integrated transport utility, is proud to announce its latest order for eight state-of-the-art harbor tugs, to be constructed by Cochin Shipyard Ltd. This initiative aligns with the Government of India’s Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiatives by fostering local manufacturing and advancing self-reliance in the maritime sector.

The total contract value is approximately INR 450 crore, and delivery of these tugs is scheduled to commence in December 2026, continuing through May 2028. These tugs will significantly enhance the efficiency and safety of vessel operations across Indian ports.

Mr. Ashwani Gupta, Whole-Time Director & CEO of Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ), commented, “This collaboration with Cochin Shipyard Ltd reflects our commitment to strengthening maritime infrastructure in India and our trust in the capabilities of India’s PSUs. Leveraging world-class local manufacturing, we aim to contribute to the Make in India initiative while ensuring that our operations meet international standards of safety and efficiency.”

Previously, APSEZ awarded Cochin Shipyard Ltd the construction of two 62-tonne bollard pull ASD (Azimuthing Stern Drive) tugs for Ocean Sparkle Ltd, which were delivered ahead of schedule and deployed at Paradip Port and New Mangalore Port. Construction of three additional ASD tugs is currently underway, bringing the total order to 13. These initiatives aim to create a younger, more efficient fleet to provide reliable services in the port sector.

This initiative also emphasizes sustainable practices in shipbuilding and underscores the critical role of the maritime sector in India’s economic growth.
