Kalvakuntla Kavitha Detained During Protest Seeking Land for Telangana Martyrs’ Families

Hyderabad, July 2026 : Police on Thursday detained Telangana Rakshana Sena (TRS) president Kalvakuntla Kavitha and several party workers after they staged a protest at Boduppal on the outskirts of Hyderabad, demanding that the Telangana government fulfil its promise of providing house sites to the families of martyrs of the Telangana statehood movement.

The protest, organised by the TRS at Boduppal in Medchal-Malkajgiri district, sought to press the Congress government to honour its commitment of allotting 250-square-yard residential plots to the families of those who participated in and sacrificed their lives during the struggle for a separate Telangana state.

Hundreds of TRS workers gathered at the protest venue from early Thursday morning despite police refusing permission for the demonstration. Authorities removed tents erected by the party workers and detained several protesters in an attempt to prevent the agitation from proceeding.

Tension escalated when Kavitha, accompanied by party supporters, reached Medipally and participated in a puja at the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) layout before proceeding with the protest.

A heavy police contingent deployed at the site attempted to disperse the demonstrators, including a large number of women supporters. As the protesters resisted, a scuffle broke out between police personnel and party workers.

In dramatic scenes, police officers physically lifted Kavitha and escorted her into a police vehicle before shifting her to the Bollarum Police Station. Several other TRS leaders and activists were also taken into preventive custody.

Speaking to the media before being taken away, Kavitha accused the Congress government of failing to honour its election promises and declared that “the countdown has begun” for the ruling dispensation.

She said the protesters were exercising their democratic right by demanding the implementation of assurances made to the families of Telangana martyrs. According to her, the government’s decision to arrest protesters instead of addressing their concerns reflected its unwillingness to fulfil commitments made during the election campaign.

Senior TRS leaders strongly condemned the police action, alleging that the government was using force to suppress dissent instead of responding to legitimate public demands.

The party leaders recalled that the Congress had promised not only 250-square-yard house sites for the families of Telangana martyrs but also a monthly honorary pension of Rs 25,000 for their parents or spouses, along with a government job for one eligible family member.

According to the TRS, these commitments played a significant role in the Congress’ electoral campaign but have remained unfulfilled after it assumed office.

Party leaders alleged that instead of implementing the promised welfare measures, the government was attempting to silence those demanding accountability. They asserted that the arrests would not deter the party from continuing its campaign.

The TRS vowed to intensify its agitation across Telangana and take the issue before the people, maintaining that it would continue its struggle until every family of the Telangana martyrs receives the promised 250-square-yard land allotment and other benefits announced by the Congress before coming to power.
