Tamil Nadu BJP Chief Annamalai Protests Against Anna University Incident
Coimbatore : Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai staged a dramatic protest outside his residence, whipping himself to highlight the Anna University sexual assault case and denounce the DMK government’s “continuous injustice.” He stated that such acts of self-flagellation are rooted in Tamil culture and are used to spotlight issues impacting women, children, and the public at large.
The incident at Anna University involved the alleged sexual assault of a second-year student on campus, leading to the arrest of one individual. The case has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, including the BJP, AIADMK, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), who accused the ruling DMK government of failing to maintain law and order.
During a press conference in Chennai, Annamalai announced his decision to forgo sandals and undertake a 48-day fast, symbolizing his demand for justice and his resolve to oust the DMK from power. “What happened at Anna University is just the tipping point. Over the past three years, the state has witnessed rampant injustice and corruption targeting women, children, and the common man,” Annamalai declared.
While delivering six lashes during his protest, Annamalai was stopped by a supporter, but he reiterated his commitment to the Tamil tradition of self-punishment to call attention to societal issues. “This is not against any individual but against systemic injustice,” he said, vowing to continue his fight for justice.
The BJP and AIADMK organized statewide demonstrations to protest the Anna University incident, during which Tamil Nadu BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan and several other party members were detained by police. Soundararajan accused the DMK government of silencing dissent, stating, “They want to crush our voice, but we will not be intimidated.”
Meanwhile, VCK founder Thol. Thirumavalavan and TVK leader Vijay also expressed outrage over the incident, calling for swift and exemplary legal action. Vijay described the attack as “shocking and painful” and urged the state government to ensure justice is served. “The attacker has been arrested, but any others involved must also face accountability,” Vijay stated on social media.
The incident has reignited concerns over safety in educational institutions and the state government’s handling of law and order. Opposition parties have demanded an urgent review of campus security measures and stricter action against perpetrators of sexual harassment.
This high-profile protest has intensified the political debate in Tamil Nadu, with the opposition leveraging the incident to criticize the ruling DMK’s governance.
