67 Feared Dead in Washington D.C. Mid-Air Collision

New Delhi – A devastating mid-air collision near Ronald Reagan National Airport involving an American Airlines passenger jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter has left no known survivors, officials confirmed. The tragedy, which occurred last night over the Potomac River, is now one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent U.S. history.

President Trump Responds to the Tragedy

Addressing the nation, President Donald Trump expressed deep sorrow, stating, “The U.S. is grieving after a plane and a military helicopter crashed in Washington, D.C., last night.” He acknowledged the presence of Russian nationals among the passengers but did not specify the other nationalities on board.

“We can only try to understand the pain you are feeling,” he said, offering condolences to the victims’ families. He further reassured the public, saying, “Our hearts are broken with yours. We are here to comfort you.”

Rescue Operations and Search Efforts

Rescue teams have so far recovered 30 bodies from the icy waters of the Potomac River, with emergency operations still ongoing. The collision involved American Airlines Flight 5342, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members, and a Sikorsky H-60 Black Hawk helicopter, which had three U.S. military personnel on board.

The passenger jet had departed from Wichita, Kansas, and was on its final approach to Washington, D.C., when it collided with the military helicopter, which had taken off from Fort Belvoir, Virginia, for a routine training mission.

Eyewitnesses reported a fireball in the night sky, followed by debris plummeting into the river. The commercial aircraft reportedly broke apart upon impact, sinking rapidly, while the Black Hawk helicopter floated briefly before capsizing and disappearing beneath the water.

Questions Over Air Traffic Control and Safety Procedures

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that weather conditions were normal at the time of the crash, with a “clear night” and “experienced pilots” operating both aircraft. However, investigators are now focusing on why the Black Hawk helicopter was in that specific airspace at the time of the collision.

Former President Donald Trump also questioned the circumstances, reportedly asking, “Why was the Black Hawk not able to climb higher to avoid the collision?” Investigators from both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are looking into mechanical failures, air traffic control miscommunications, and flight protocol adherence as potential causes.

Challenges in Rescue and Recovery

More than 300 emergency personnel have been deployed to the crash site, using rubber boats and specialized equipment to navigate the treacherous conditions. Washington D.C. Fire and Emergency Services Chief John Donnelly described the strong winds, floating debris, and near-freezing water as major obstacles in the recovery process.

“The challenge is access,” Donnelly explained. “There is ice on the water, and conditions are dangerous and difficult to work in.” Authorities fear that many victims remain trapped in the submerged wreckage.

Prominent Figures Among the Victims

Among those aboard Flight 5342 were U.S. and Russian figure skaters, their coaches, and family members returning from a training camp in Kansas. U.S. Figure Skating confirmed that several athletes were on board, while Russian officials identified former world champions Yevgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov among the deceased.

Pentagon and Military Investigation

Pentagon official Pete Hegseth confirmed that the Black Hawk crew consisted of experienced pilots conducting a mandatory night training exercise using night vision goggles. The Department of Defense has launched an internal review to determine whether a flight path error or miscommunication with air traffic control contributed to the disaster.

As recovery efforts continue, grieving families await answers and accountability for what led to this catastrophic mid-air collision.
