Chhattisgarh’s Priceless Treasure: Gondwana Marine Fossil Park Unveils 293-Million-Year-Old Marine Mysteries
Chhattisgarh, known for its breathtaking natural beauty, is home to several spectacular tourist destinations. However, it’s time to look beyond traditional attractions and explore one of the state’s most priceless treasures—the Gondwana Marine Fossil Park. Located in the Manendragarh-Chirmiri-Bharatpur district, this park is the largest marine fossil park in Asia, offering a fascinating glimpse into 293 million years of Earth’s history. This region, once submerged under a cold ancient sea, holds key insights into the prehistoric past. More than just a window to history, the park has the potential to place India’s geological heritage on the global map. Recognizing its significance, the Chhattisgarh government is committed to transforming it into a leading scientific tourism hub.

Discovery and Significance
The Gondwana Marine Fossil Park was first discovered in 1954 by geologist S.K. Ghosh during coal mining activities. It is India’s only marine fossil park recognized as a National Geological Monument. Fossils of ancient marine organisms such as bivalves, gastropods, brachiopods, crinoids, and bryozoans have been found here. These fossils belong to the Talchir Formation, which dates back to the early Permian Period.
According to researchers, this region was submerged due to a sudden rise in sea levels, likely caused by melting glaciers. Over time, as the sea receded, the marine organisms became embedded in rocks, eventually transforming into fossils over millions of years.
A Geological Marvel of Global Importance
The Gondwana Marine Fossil Park is not just significant for Chhattisgarh or India but holds immense importance for the entire world. Similar fossils have been discovered in Brazil’s Paraná Basin, New South Wales in Australia, Alexander Island in Antarctica, and South Africa’s Karoo Basin. The park provides critical insights into the geological history of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana.
Conservation and Government Initiatives
With increasing environmental changes and human activities, the park faces potential threats. To protect this invaluable heritage, the Chhattisgarh government has taken proactive conservation measures. In August 2021, scientists from the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences, along with officials from the Chhattisgarh State Biodiversity Board and the Forest Department, conducted a detailed survey of the site. In March 2022, the Chhattisgarh Forest Department officially declared it as the state’s first marine fossil park.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, the state government is actively working on the development and beautification of the park, with a sanctioned budget of ₹41.99 lakh. Plans are underway to enhance its infrastructure, making it more accessible for tourism and scientific research.
With its rare fossil wealth and scientific significance, the Gondwana Marine Fossil Park is set to become a landmark destination, offering a unique blend of history, science, and natural beauty.
