Mandatory Installation of ‘HSRP Number Plates’ for Pre-April 1, 2019 Vehicles as per Supreme Court Directive
HSRP Installation Rates in Maharashtra, Including Fitment Charges
Mumbai : As per the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989, it is mandatory for all vehicles to have a High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP). Vehicles registered on or after April 1, 2019, have been receiving these number plates from their respective dealers. However, as per the directives issued by the Supreme Court, vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, are now required to install HSRP plates.
Several states across the country have already started implementing HSRP installation for older vehicles. In Maharashtra, a tendering process was conducted for the installation of HSRP plates on vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Following this, a High-Power Committee finalized the rates of three companies, and based on the approved rates, the Transport Commissioner’s Office has issued work commencement orders.
The HSRP installation charges in Maharashtra include both the number plate cost and fitment charges. However, in some states, the rates do not include fitment charges. Details regarding the rates can be found on the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) website, as informed by the Deputy Transport Commissioner.
Everything You Need to Know About High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP)
What is HSRP?
A High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) is a specialized number plate made entirely of aluminium and designed to enhance vehicle security. It features a chromium-based hologram in the upper left corner, containing key details about the vehicle. Additionally, each HSRP has a unique laser code, which cannot be easily tampered with or removed. This security feature ensures the authenticity of the number plate and helps prevent vehicle theft.
The installation of HSRP is mandatory for both new and old vehicles across India. If your vehicle was registered before April 1, 2019, you are required to install an HSRP as per the latest regulations.
Penalty for Not Having an HSRP
Failure to install an HSRP can result in a fine, which varies from state to state. In Maharashtra, vehicle owners must get their HSRP installed before March 31, 2025. If the deadline is missed, they may face penalties ranging from ₹500 to ₹5,000, depending on the specific traffic rules of the state.
