Zelenskyy Calls for Security Guarantees Amid Ceasefire Dispute with Trump
Kyiv: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reiterated his call for security guarantees from the United States, emphasizing that a “just and lasting peace” is unattainable without firm assurances for Kyiv. His statement came in response to a public dispute with former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a ceasefire in the ongoing war with Russia.
In a detailed thread on X (formerly Twitter), Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support of the U.S. government and the American people. However, he urged Washington to take a stronger stance in support of Ukraine, cautioning that any ceasefire without proper guarantees would be futile. He underscored the need for sustained support, citing Russia’s past violations of peace agreements.
Concerns Over a Fragile Ceasefire
Zelenskyy laid the blame squarely on Russia, which he referred to as the “enemy,” for bringing war to Ukrainian soil. He voiced concerns that Moscow could once again violate a ceasefire agreement, just as it had done “25 times in the last decade.“
“We are immensely grateful to the United States for its unwavering support. I thank President Trump, Congress, and the American people for standing by us. Over the past three years of full-scale aggression, U.S. assistance has been crucial to our survival,” Zelenskyy stated.
Despite recent disagreements, he reaffirmed Ukraine’s strategic partnership with the U.S. but stressed the need for transparent and honest dialogue to ensure both nations remain aligned on their shared objectives. He cited former U.S. President Ronald Reagan to emphasize the difference between a temporary ceasefire and genuine peace, which he defined as a state of freedom, justice, and respect for human rights.
Security Assurances & Mineral Deal Negotiations
Zelenskyy acknowledged that Ukraine is open to discussions about a mineral trade agreement, but only if it forms the basis for security guarantees.
“We are ready to sign a mineral deal as a first step towards securing long-term guarantees, but this alone is insufficient. A ceasefire without proper assurances is dangerous for Ukraine. We have fought for three years, and our people deserve to know that the U.S. firmly stands with us.”
He reaffirmed that Russia remains the aggressor and that Ukraine’s allies must remain strong at the negotiation table. “This war is not just about territory. It is about our freedom and survival. Every single life lost matters, and we must not allow Russia’s invasion to be justified under any pretext.”
A Call for a Stronger U.S. Stance
Zelenskyy pressed the U.S. administration to take a clear and forceful position, emphasizing Ukraine’s longstanding ties with Washington. He acknowledged that the U.S. may seek diplomatic talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but warned that any agreement must be based on strength.
“The United States has always advocated ‘peace through strength,’ and together we can take firm action against Putin. Our relationship with the U.S. president is not just a matter of diplomacy; it represents a historic bond between our two nations. I always begin my statements with gratitude to the American people, who have supported Ukraine in its darkest hours,” he remarked.
Zelenskyy expressed hope that American aid and diplomatic backing would continue. “The American people have helped save Ukrainian lives. Human rights and democracy must take priority. We seek nothing more than strong, lasting ties with the United States,” he concluded.
The White House Dispute
Zelenskyy’s statements came in the wake of a heated exchange with Trump and Vice President JD Vance during a meeting in the Oval Office. The verbal clash, witnessed by White House officials, journalists, and Ukrainian diplomats, highlighted growing tensions between the two leaders.
During the meeting, Vice President Vance accused Zelenskyy of using the press to pressure the U.S. administration, referencing his public appeals for greater support. Vance also criticized the Ukrainian president for his close associations with Democratic leaders during the 2024 U.S. election campaign, calling his actions “disrespectful” to the current administration.
Following the Oval Office discussions, Trump stated that Zelenskyy had refused to commit to an immediate ceasefire, complicating the path toward negotiations with Russia. The Ukrainian president reportedly left the White House without signing the anticipated mineral agreement or holding a joint press conference with Trump.
Russia’s Continued Aggression & Ukraine’s Resistance
Zelenskyy has repeatedly emphasized that Russia cannot be trusted to uphold any ceasefire agreement. In his statements, he pointed out that Moscow has repeatedly broken previous truces, underscoring that any agreement must come with strong security measures.
“When we talk about losses, we are talking about human lives. Russia invaded our homes, murdered our people, and sought to erase our identity. This is not just about territories or statistics—this is about real people and real suffering.”
Zelenskyy’s remarks signal Ukraine’s firm stance on securing peace through strong defense measures rather than compromising with Moscow without guarantees. He called on the U.S. to recognize Ukraine’s continued struggle as part of a broader fight for democracy and global stability.
U.S.-Ukraine Relations: What’s Next?
Despite the growing tensions, Ukraine and the U.S. continue to be strategic allies, with both nations recognizing the importance of military and financial support. While Washington has provided billions in aid, political debates over further assistance persist in the U.S., particularly as Trump signals a more cautious approach toward foreign military involvement.
Zelenskyy remains optimistic that the U.S. will stand by Ukraine, emphasizing that this war is about more than just one country—it is about upholding international order.
As the conflict drags on, Ukraine’s leadership continues to push for stronger commitments from its allies, knowing that any faltering support could embolden Russia to escalate its aggression. The coming weeks may prove critical in determining whether Kyiv secures the guarantees it seeks or faces increasing pressure to negotiate under uncertain terms.
With no immediate ceasefire agreement in sight, Ukraine is bracing for continued battles—both on the ground and in the diplomatic arena.
