Howrah Division Enhances Preparedness for Thunderstorms.
In anticipation of thunderstorms with gusty wind forecasted by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) from 21st to 24th March, the Howrah Division of Eastern Railway has implemented a series of proactive measures to ensure the safety of train operations and passengers. With predictions of heavy rain, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 – 50 kmph across parts of South Bengal, railway authorities have intensified preparedness to minimize disruptions and safeguard railway infrastructure.
Comprehensive Safety & Preparedness Measures:
- Securing Overhead Equipment (OHE): OHE structures, insulators, and fittings are being reinforced to withstand strong winds, ensuring uninterrupted power supply for trains.
- Ensuring Signal System Resilience: Regular inspections of signalling cables, relay rooms, and lightning protection systems are being carried out to prevent failures and maintain smooth train operations.
- Track & Drainage Maintenance: Intensive inspections and cleaning of track drainage systems are being conducted to prevent waterlogging and potential track damage. Maintenance teams are on high alert for immediate resolution of any issues.
- Tree Pruning Along Tracks: Railway personnel have been directed to identify and trim weak or overhanging branches near railway tracks and OHE lines to prevent disruptions caused by falling trees during strong winds.
- Platform Shelter Reinforcement: Structural integrity checks of platform shelters and overhead covers are being conducted. Necessary reinforcements and repairs are underway to ensure these structures can withstand high winds, ensuring passenger safety.
- Uninterrupted Power Backup: Generator backups have been put in place at stations and control rooms to maintain operations in case of power outages.
- Increased Crew Vigilance: Loco pilots, station staff, and railway personnel have been directed to remain highly alert during the storm period.
- Proactive Weather Monitoring & Disaster Response: A close watch is being kept on weather developments, with emergency response teams on standby for immediate action.
The Howrah Division remains fully committed in tackling the challenges posed by mother nature, thereby prioritising passenger safety and operational efficiency.
