Special NIA Court Grants 18-Day Custody of Tahawwur Rana
A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court has granted 18 days of custodial remand for Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The decision came after Rana was produced before the Patiala House Court in Delhi late Wednesday night by NIA officials.
The prosecution, represented by senior advocate Dayan Krishnan and public prosecutor Narender Mann, sought 20 days of custodial interrogation, citing the need for extensive questioning in connection with Rana’s alleged involvement in the terror plot. Rana, who was extradited from the United States earlier this month, was brought under tight security for the court appearance.
On behalf of the accused, advocate Piyush Sachdeva from the Delhi Legal Services Authority argued against the extended remand, requesting the court to consider the legal and procedural safeguards due to the accused.
After hearing arguments from both sides, Special Judge Chanderjeet Singh granted 18 days of custody to the NIA for further investigation. The case continues to draw national attention due to its link to one of India’s deadliest terrorist attacks, which claimed over 170 lives in Mumbai in November 2008.
Rana is expected to be questioned extensively in the coming days.
