Gujarat Titans Stun Delhi Capitals in Record-Breaking 204-Run Chase

In a thrilling contest at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat Titans (GT) pulled off a historic seven-wicket victory against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 35 of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL). Chasing a daunting target of 204 runs, GT displayed nerves of steel and chased it down with four balls to spare, marking their highest-ever successful chase in IPL history.

The star of the night was Jos Buttler, who delivered a masterclass in T20 batting. Anchoring the innings after the early loss of skipper Shubman Gill—run out for just 7—Buttler remained unbeaten on 97 off 54 balls, smashing 11 fours and 4 sixes. Despite the fall of wickets around him, Buttler stood firm, orchestrating the chase with calm precision and flair.

Sai Sudharsan provided an early boost with a quick-fire 36 off 21 balls, including five boundaries and a six, putting up a brisk 60-run partnership with Buttler. After Sudharsan’s dismissal by Kuldeep Yadav, Sherfane Rutherford joined Buttler and added another vital 50-run stand, scoring 43 off 34 balls with one four and three sixes. With 10 runs needed off the final six deliveries, Rahul Tewatia sealed the deal in style, smashing a six and a four off Mitchell Starc to complete the memorable run chase. Tewatia remained unbeaten on 11 off just three deliveries.

Earlier, Gujarat captain Shubman Gill opted to field first after winning the toss. Delhi Capitals started aggressively with Abishek Porel hitting 16 off the opening over, but his innings was cut short by Arshad Khan. KL Rahul stepped up and struck 28 off 13 balls before falling to a perfect yorker from Prasidh Krishna.

Karun Nair and Tristan Stubbs added quick runs, with Nair scoring 31 off 18 and Stubbs contributing 31. At the halfway mark, DC stood at a promising 105/3. Captain Axar Patel played a stabilizing role with 39 off 32 balls, partnering Stubbs for a 53-run stand. Later, Ashutosh Sharma added the final flourish, hammering 37 off just 19 balls, pushing DC’s total to a challenging 203/8.

For Gujarat, Prasidh Krishna was the standout performer with the ball. He took 4 wickets for 41 runs in his four overs and claimed the Purple Cap in the process. His scalps included key players like Rahul and Nair, and he was backed by tight spells from Mohammed Siraj, Ravisrinivasan Sai Kishore, and Arshad Khan, each taking a wicket.

GT’s chase began with an early hiccup, losing Gill to a brilliant direct-hit run-out by Nair. However, Buttler and Sudharsan’s aggressive strokeplay powered them to 73/1 in just seven overs. Kuldeep Yadav picked up his 12th wicket of the season by dismissing Sudharsan, but Buttler continued unfazed, bringing up his third fifty of the season in 32 balls.

Rutherford’s acceleration and another strong partnership brought the equation down to 76 off the final seven overs. Despite the scoreboard pressure, Gujarat held their composure. Buttler’s control and Tewatia’s signature finishing touch ensured the Titans crossed the line with ease.

This win not only took Gujarat Titans to the top of the IPL 2025 points table but also demonstrated their depth, resilience, and firepower in chasing mammoth totals. The victory stands out as a defining moment in their campaign and sends a strong signal to the rest of the league.

Team Maverick.
