India’s First Bullet Train to Begin Phased Operations from August 15, 2027: Ashwini Vaishnaw

New Delhi, July 2026 : India is set to enter the high-speed rail era with the launch of its first bullet train service from August 15, 2027, as the Surat-Bilimora section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail (MAHSR) corridor becomes operational in the first phase, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday.

The landmark 508-km Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train Corridor, India’s first high-speed rail project, will be commissioned in stages rather than waiting for the completion of the entire route. The Surat-Bilimora stretch will mark the country’s inaugural bullet train service, with the remaining sections expected to be opened progressively over the following months.

According to the Railway Ministry, after the launch of the Surat-Bilimora segment, additional stretches including Vapi-Surat, Vapi-Ahmedabad, Ahmedabad-Thane, and finally Ahmedabad-Mumbai will be commissioned in phases, ensuring early operational benefits while construction continues on the remaining portions of the corridor.

Sharing the project’s progress, Vaishnaw said nearly 80 per cent of the construction work has already been completed and the project is advancing rapidly to meet the scheduled timeline. He described the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor as a transformative initiative that will significantly reduce travel time between India’s financial capital Mumbai and Gujarat’s commercial hub Ahmedabad while introducing world-class rail technology.

The minister said the bullet train project is expected to boost regional connectivity, encourage industrial development along the route and generate fresh economic opportunities in the states through which it passes.

Looking beyond the country’s first high-speed rail corridor, Vaishnaw also unveiled the Centre’s long-term vision for expanding India’s bullet train network. He announced three proposed high-speed rail corridors connecting Hyderabad with Pune, Chennai, and Bengaluru, aimed at transforming transportation across southern India.

In addition, the government is planning a Hyderabad-Mumbai bullet train route, which is expected to drastically reduce travel time between the two major metropolitan cities and strengthen economic integration across the region.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given three high-speed bullet train corridors to Hyderabad, which will transform the city’s landscape,” Vaishnaw said, adding that the proposed network would improve connectivity across Telangana and benefit several districts in the state.

The Railway Minister also highlighted the Centre’s broader railway modernisation programme under the Nav-Nirmaan initiative. As part of the nationwide station redevelopment project, 261 railway stations are being upgraded with modern infrastructure, improved passenger amenities and enhanced facilities.

In Telangana, major stations including Secunderabad, Begumpet, and HITEC City are among those undergoing comprehensive redevelopment as part of the initiative.

The phased rollout of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project marks a significant milestone in India’s transportation infrastructure, paving the way for a modern high-speed rail network that is expected to reshape intercity travel and drive economic growth in the years ahead.
