India Declares Three-Day State Mourning in Honour of Pope Francis
New Delhi : The Government of India has announced a three-day state mourning to pay tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88. He was the first non-European Pope in nearly 1,300 years and served as the Supreme Pontiff of the Holy See.
In an official statement, the Ministry of Home Affairs confirmed the mourning schedule: April 22 (Tuesday) and April 23 (Wednesday) will be observed as state mourning, along with an additional day on the date of the Pope’s funeral.
As a mark of respect, the national flag will be flown at half mast across all government buildings in India where the flag is regularly displayed. Additionally, no official entertainment or celebratory events will take place during the mourning period.
Pope Francis was globally admired for his commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and humility. His passing is being mourned worldwide, including in India, where the Catholic community and leaders across religious and political lines have expressed deep sorrow.
