Congress Reshuffles Organisation, Appoints New General Secretary and State In-charges

New Delhi, July 2026 : The All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Wednesday announced a key organisational reshuffle, appointing senior leaders to important positions as part of its efforts to strengthen the party’s structure and improve its electoral preparedness across the country. The appointments, approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, came into effect immediately and are being viewed as the first step in a broader organisational overhaul.

According to an official statement issued by the party, senior leader Ghulam Ahmed Mir has been appointed as the Congress General Secretary in charge of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Meanwhile, Prakash Joshi has been entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the party’s in-charge for West Bengal.

The latest appointments reflect the Congress leadership’s focus on reinforcing its organisational network in politically significant states ahead of future electoral contests. Both Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are considered strategically important for the party as it seeks to expand its influence and rebuild its grassroots presence.

In Tamil Nadu, the Congress remains an important ally of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and is working to consolidate its position within the alliance while strengthening its independent organisational base. The neighbouring Union Territory of Puducherry also continues to be a politically significant region where the party aims to improve its electoral prospects.

The appointment of Ghulam Ahmed Mir is expected to provide experienced leadership to the party’s southern operations. A veteran Congress leader from Jammu and Kashmir, Mir has held several organisational and administrative responsibilities over the years and is regarded as a seasoned strategist. His experience is expected to help coordinate the party’s activities and strengthen its organisational framework in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Prakash Joshi, who has earned recognition within the party for his organisational abilities, has been assigned the challenging responsibility of overseeing West Bengal. The Congress has struggled to regain political relevance in the state, where it faces stiff competition from both the ruling Trinamool Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). His immediate task will be to revitalise the party organisation, expand its grassroots network and prepare it for future electoral battles, including the next Assembly elections.

The Congress said the appointments have been made with immediate effect, with Mallikarjun Kharge expressing confidence that the new office-bearers will strengthen the party machinery at the state level. Party sources indicated that additional organisational changes could follow in the coming weeks as the leadership continues its nationwide restructuring exercise.

The reshuffle is part of the Congress’ broader strategy to energise its cadre, improve coordination between the central leadership and state units, and build a stronger organisational foundation ahead of upcoming elections. With several states set to witness crucial electoral contests over the next two years, the party is expected to continue making leadership changes aimed at improving its performance and expanding its political footprint across India.
