Mumbai : Coastal states in India are home to a thriving fishing industry. To protect the interests of fisherfolk, address coastal challenges, and discuss development initiatives, a national-level meeting will be held on April 28, 2025, in Mumbai under the leadership of Union Minister for Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Rajeev Ranjan. The meeting will bring together Fisheries Ministers from all coastal states across India.

The Union Ministry of Fisheries is actively implementing several major schemes for the welfare of fisherfolk, including the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, Fisheries and Aquaculture Infrastructure Development Fund, Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samriddhi Sah-Yojana, and the Kisan Credit Card Scheme. These initiatives aim to promote the growth of the fisheries and aquaculture sector while improving the socio-economic conditions of fishers, aquaculture farmers, and fishery workers.

Coastal states and union territories are significantly contributing to national food production, processing, and exports of marine products, thereby playing a vital role in strengthening the country’s GDP and ensuring nutritional security. This meeting will comprehensively discuss the future of fisherfolk, resolution of coastal issues, and implementation of developmental plans.

Fisheries Ministers from nine states and four union territories, along with state secretaries, fisheries commissioners, and directors, will attend the meeting. During the event, Union Minister Rajeev Ranjan will distribute scheme benefits under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Kisan Samriddhi Sah-Yojana, Kisan Credit Cards, and support for fisheries producer cooperatives and innovative projects.

Additionally, Dr. A.K. Jena, Director General of the ICAR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research), will present model guidelines for fisheries development. Neetu Prasad, Joint Secretary from the Ministry of Fisheries, will present strategies to boost fish exports from various states.
