Mumbai Indians Rise to Second Place with 6 Wins and 12 Points in IPL 2025

Mumbai Indians have made a stunning recovery in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 after a rocky start to the season. From languishing at the bottom of the points table with just one win from their first five matches, the five-time champions have turned things around, winning five consecutive games. Now, they sit comfortably in second place with 6 wins and 12 points, firmly back in the playoff race.

Captain Hardik Pandya expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, noting that the players know how to finish a match. “On Sunday, our players performed brilliantly against Lucknow Super Giants,” he said after the victory. Pandya’s leadership has been crucial in their turnaround, and he continues to inspire confidence in his squad.

In their latest match at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs in the 45th match of IPL 2025. Jasprit Bumrah was the star with the ball, claiming 4 wickets for 22 runs, while Trent Boult also contributed with 3 wickets for 20 runs. The bowlers’ brilliance, combined with aggressive half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton and Suryakumar Yadav, helped Mumbai post a competitive total of 215/7 in 20 overs.

Mumbai started strong, but the middle overs saw them falter slightly, finding themselves at 180/6 after 18 overs. However, Naman Dheer (25 not out from 11 balls) and Corbin Bosch (20 from 10 balls) provided a late surge, hitting some powerful blows to lift the total to 215/7. Their partnership at the death overs proved vital, showing that the team could bounce back even after losing wickets in the middle overs. This victory marked Mumbai’s fifth consecutive win, the first time they’ve achieved such a streak since 2020.

Pandya was full of praise for his players, highlighting that everyone knows their role and is contributing when needed. He specifically mentioned the efforts of Dheer and Bosch, acknowledging their crucial contributions at the tail end of the innings. “We kept the momentum going and motivated everyone to contribute. We knew when to finish the match and performed brilliantly,” said Pandya. He also emphasized that good teams are built when every player contributes, underscoring the collective effort that has fueled Mumbai’s resurgence.

The victory was particularly significant given the challenges Pandya faced last year when he took over the captaincy from long-time leader Rohit Sharma. Despite the pressure and some negative reactions from fans, Pandya has shown remarkable leadership, guiding Mumbai to a much-needed recovery this season.

Mumbai’s turnaround is one of the highlights of IPL 2025. After starting with two consecutive losses, Mumbai Indians bounced back with a dominant 8-wicket victory over Kolkata Knight Riders. However, the team faced more struggles with two additional defeats, leaving them with just one win from five matches. At that point, many questioned their chances of making the playoffs. But now, with five straight wins, the team is back on track and poised to challenge for the title once again.

Mumbai’s resurgence is a testament to the resilience of Pandya and his squad. The team’s recent win against Lucknow was a key moment in their season, and another victory would equal their best run of consecutive wins in a single IPL season. Interestingly, Mumbai Indians’ record of six consecutive wins came in the 2008 season, though that year they failed to reach the playoffs or win the title.

Since then, Mumbai has seen tremendous success, winning the IPL title four times in seasons where they registered five consecutive wins. These seasons—2013, 2015, 2017, and 2020—saw Mumbai dominate, with the team securing the title in each of those years. The only time they failed to win the title during such a streak was in 2010 when they finished as runners-up.

As Mumbai looks ahead, they will take on Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on May 1. With the momentum on their side, the team will be eager to extend their winning streak and continue their climb up the points table. If they secure another victory, they will equal their best record for consecutive wins in a season, setting the stage for an exciting finish to the IPL 2025 campaign.
