Transformative ‘Eat Right Street Food Hub’ Initiative: Maharashtra Leads the Nation – Minister of State Yogesh Kadam
India’s First All-Women Operated ‘Eat Right Street Food Hub’ Launched in Mumbai
Mumbai : The Mahim Seafood Plaza stands as a shining example of how empowered women from grassroots self-help groups can redefine national food safety standards when given the right opportunities and training. Maharashtra is proud to lead the nation in the transformative ‘Eat Right Street Food Hub’ initiative, said Minister of State for Food and Drug Administration, Yogesh Kadam, while praising the programme.
India’s first fully women-operated ‘Eat Right Street Food Hub’ has been launched in Mumbai. Spearheaded by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Greater Mumbai Division, and supported by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), this unique hub at Mahim Reti Bunder is run entirely by women members of self-help groups. A certificate distribution ceremony to mark this achievement was held on May 2 in Mahim, during which Minister Kadam awarded certificates to 153 women from these groups.
Minister Kadam commended the women for upholding the highest standards of hygiene, noting that the food prepared is not only clean and tasty but deeply rooted in the traditional culinary heritage of the Konkan region. He visited various food stalls at the Mahim Seafood Plaza, sampled authentic Koli cuisine, and engaged in conversations with the women entrepreneurs.
The Mahim Seafood Plaza operates every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday from 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM. Managed entirely by the 153 women of the self-help group, each stall follows strict hygiene protocols. The women have successfully completed food safety training and certification under the Eat Right India initiative’s FoSTaC programme, ensuring full compliance with food safety standards through rigorous audits and inspections.
Minister Kadam also honoured several key contributors who played a vital role in the successful certification of the hub. These included Dakshita Pawar and Aniket Patere, community organisers from BMC’s G-North Ward; community development officers Aniket Pachharkar and Ajinkya Pachharkar; and Assistant Commissioner (Food) Anupama Balasaheb Patil.
