The story of MITTI itself is as inspiring as the people behind its counters. It began in a small tin shed with a simple dream of a 23-year-old entrepreneur—to show the world the magic of abilities rather than disabilities. There was no start-up capital, only determination, countless rejections and an unwavering belief that people with disabilities deserved opportunities, not sympathy.

Today, that dream has blossomed into one of India’s most inspiring social enterprises. Supported by the Telangana Social Impact Group (T-SIG), along with government and corporate partners, MITTI has expanded to more than 40 locations across the country, including Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, several international airports and now Rashtrapati Nilayam in Hyderabad.

Beyond serving food, MITTI creates livelihoods, provides skill development and empowers thousands of adults with physical, intellectual and psychiatric disabilities to become financially independent. The Rashtrapati Nilayam outlet also showcases beautifully handcrafted home décor, office accessories, toys and stationery made by persons with disabilities, many of which have attracted appreciation from national and international visitors.

Walking into the café, one immediately notices the warmth of its staff. There are no scripted smiles here. Every greeting comes with genuine pride because every employee knows they have earned this opportunity through hard work.

Among them is Ananthalakshmi, who has been working at MITTI Café for the past one-and-a-half years. Her journey reflects the impact the café has had on many lives.

“I am thankful to Alina ma’am for giving me this opportunity,” she says softly.

“My son has multiple disabilities. I don’t know whether I would have found such an opportunity anywhere else. I have learned so much while working here, and I hope to continue getting more opportunities at MITTI Café.”

She proudly adds that everyone working at the café learns from one another every day.

“All of us are persons with disabilities, and we support each other. We continue learning together.”

The employees here are all 18 years and above, and despite facing different challenges in life, they share one common dream—to be treated with dignity and respect.

The Rashtrapati Nilayam outlet has been operating for nearly one-and-a-half years, yet many visitors to the historic Presidential retreat remain unaware that such an inspiring initiative exists within its reception centre.

When asked what message she would like to give to people, Ananthalakshmi’s appeal is simple yet deeply moving.

“I request everyone visiting Rashtrapati Nilayam to come to MITTI Café. More visitors mean more support for us. Right now, not many people come here. We hope more people will visit in the future.”

Those few words perhaps capture the entire purpose of the café.
