Creation of Advanced Treatment Facilities for Sickle Cell and Thalassemia Patients – Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis

Inauguration of Various Projects at Government Medical Hospital

Nagpur : Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken steps to make the country free from sickle cell and thalassemia. To free patients from the grip of these dreadful diseases, all possible efforts will be made to create quality treatment facilities at the Government Medical College here, assured Devendra Fadnavis today.

Various facilities and development works constructed at a cost of nearly ₹70 crore at the Government Medical College and Hospital were inaugurated at the hands of the Chief Minister today. On this occasion, Minister of State Adv. Ashish Jaiswal, MP Shyamkumar Barve, MLAs Krishna Khopde, Pravin Datke, Sandeep Joshi, Kripal Tumane, Abhijeet Wanjari, former MP Dr. Vikas Mahatme, Commissioner of Medical Education and Research Department Rajiv Nivatkar, Dean of Government Medical College Dr. Raj Gajbhiye, Director Dr. Ajay Chandanwale, Joint Director Vivek Pakmode, Chief Engineer Dinesh Nandanwar and others were present.

Mr. Fadnavis said that Government Medical College and Indira Gandhi Government Medical College are major medical institutions in Central India. Patients from all levels come here for treatment. However, as there is a growing need to provide modern facilities suitable to the current era, focus is being placed on establishing such advanced infrastructure. Due to various infrastructural developments, the quality of these institutions will increase. For the creation of quality facilities and advanced treatment in both institutions, around ₹1000 crore have been made available. Through these efforts, the Chief Minister expressed hope that these institutions would emerge as “State of the Art” medical institutions in modern India.

Hospitals are seen as centers of hope in society. The Chief Minister emphasized that these two institutions should remain leaders in medical treatment and education, and that education, facilities, and treatment here should be of higher quality compared to private institutions. He suggested giving priority to the development of outpatient departments, surgical units, and all necessary facilities for students undergoing medical education. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that soon a transformation of the Government Medical College would be visible. In his welcome address, Dean Dr. Raj Gajbhiye provided information on the various facilities being started in the college.


Works Inaugurated by the Chief Minister:

  • Hostel for 250 resident doctors working here
  • Skywalk (₹4.93 crore) connecting the trauma building to the outpatient department for transporting patients
  • Auditorium (₹5.25 crore)
  • Nuclear scan system for diagnosing serious illnesses (₹8.29 crore)
  • Cardiac cath lab for diagnosing heart patients (₹6.87 crore)
  • Robotic surgery system for performing surgeries with advanced technology (₹20.82 crore)
  • First nuclear medicine system in a government hospital in Central India for advanced treatment of cancer and other serious diseases (₹8.29 crore)
  • Smart classroom (₹1.5 crore)
  • Other hospital-related facilities (₹11 crore)

Inauguration at IGMC by Chief Minister

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the mega dialysis center and ambulances at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGMC). He also reviewed pending works in the hospital.

Three virtual smart classrooms have been completed for students here, and the Chief Minister expressed a positive attitude toward approving the remaining four classrooms. He directed that proposals for the same be immediately submitted to the government. He gave instructions to follow up on submitted proposals for necessary medical equipment. Some works in the hospital have been approved, and he ordered immediate action to complete the processes for receiving funds. Dean Dr. Ravi Chavan made a presentation on the various functional departments in the hospital.


Inaugurated Works:

  • He directed the authorities to complete the construction of a 500-bed building here urgently.
  • The work for creating various types of facilities is progressing, and instructions were given to complete the works in coordination and with speed.
  • For the mega dialysis center, 10 machines have been installed using ₹80 lakh from CSR funds.
  • The center operates under the Department of Pharmacology, and technicians have been appointed to operate the dialysis machines.
  • For patient services, a blood transfusion van and four ambulances worth ₹1.7 crore have been made available.
  • A molecular lab has been established here for immediate testing of samples for diagnosis. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis approved ₹13.5 crore for this lab, and it has become operational.
