Spain Stun France 2-0 to Storm into World Cup Final; Oyarzabal, Porro Sink Les Bleus

Score: Spain 2 (Mikel Oyarzabal 20′ pen, Pedro Porro 58′) beat France 0

Arlington (Texas), July 2026 : Spain produced a tactical masterclass to upset tournament favourites France 2-0 in the FIFA World Cup semifinal at the AT&T Stadium on Tuesday, booking their place in the final with a composed and clinical display. Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro ensured the 2010 world champions ended France’s bid for a third World Cup crown and extended their remarkable unbeaten run.

The victory sends Spain into Sunday’s title clash in New Jersey, where they will face either defending champions Argentina or England in what promises to be a thrilling finale. The win also reinforced Spain’s status as one of the most dominant international teams in world football under manager Luis de la Fuente.

France entered the semifinal as overwhelming favourites after their explosive attacking displays earlier in the tournament. Led by captain Kylian Mbappe and supported by Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembele, Bradley Barcola and Michael Olise, Les Bleus were expected to overpower Spain. Instead, they were outplayed by a disciplined Spanish side that controlled possession, dictated the tempo and neutralised one of the world’s most dangerous attacks.

Spain’s midfield trio of Rodri, Fabian Ruiz and Dani Olmo completely dominated the contest. Rodri orchestrated play with his customary composure while Ruiz and Olmo constantly found pockets of space, leaving French midfielders Adrien Rabiot and Aurelien Tchouameni chasing shadows for much of the evening.

The Spaniards made their intentions clear from the opening whistle, pressing aggressively and forcing France onto the defensive. Their early dominance nearly paid dividends before France briefly threatened through Mbappe, whose dangerous run into the penalty area in the 16th minute was brilliantly halted by young defender Pau Cubarsi with a perfectly timed block.

Spain’s relentless pressure finally yielded results in the 20th minute. Marc Cucurella’s cross caused confusion inside the French penalty area, and as Lucas Digne attempted to clear the danger, he inadvertently clipped teenage sensation Lamine Yamal. Referee Ivan Barton immediately pointed to the penalty spot despite protests from the French players.

Mikel Oyarzabal calmly stepped up and sent goalkeeper Mike Maignan the wrong way to hand Spain a deserved 1-0 lead. The goal was another landmark moment for the Real Sociedad forward, whose fifth World Cup goal equalled Spain’s all-time men’s World Cup scoring record previously held by Emilio Butragueno and David Villa.

France’s problems worsened midway through the first half when central defender William Saliba suffered an injury and was forced off, with Maxence Lacroix replacing him. The defensive reshuffle disrupted France’s rhythm even further as Spain continued to dominate possession.

The European champions came close to doubling their advantage just before halftime through a breathtaking passing sequence involving Olmo and Ruiz, but Dayot Upamecano made a crucial block to deny the latter from close range.

France showed glimpses of improvement late in the opening half, with Mbappe almost breaking through after an incisive pass from Rabiot. However, Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simon anticipated the danger superbly to preserve his team’s lead heading into the interval.

Any hopes of a French comeback quickly disappeared after the restart as Spain resumed complete control. Didier Deschamps’ side struggled to alter the pattern of play, with Rodri and company continuing to dictate proceedings from midfield.

Spain delivered the decisive blow in the 58th minute through a beautifully constructed move. Dani Olmo exchanged a slick one-two with Pedro Porro on the edge of the box before releasing the Tottenham defender into space. Porro kept his composure and clipped a fine finish beyond Maignan to double Spain’s advantage and leave France with a mountain to climb.

Three minutes later, Spain thought they had added a third goal when Lamine Yamal found the net after another flowing attack. However, the celebrations were cut short after the assistant referee raised the flag for a marginal offside.

Deschamps responded with a series of substitutions in an attempt to revive France’s fortunes, but Spain’s defensive organisation remained flawless. Mbappe was repeatedly denied by Cubarsi, Aymeric Laporte and Simon, while Dembele and Barcola struggled to find space against Spain’s compact defensive structure.

France’s best opportunity in the closing stages came when Mbappe unleashed a powerful effort from a tight angle, only for Simon to produce another excellent save at his near post. Frustration eventually got the better of the French captain, who was booked late in the game after a rash challenge on the Spanish goalkeeper.

Spain comfortably saw out the remaining minutes to complete one of the tournament’s finest performances and secure another famous victory over France.

The result extended Spain’s unbeaten run in regulation time to 37 matches, a streak dating back to March 2024. It also marked France’s third consecutive defeat to Spain in a major tournament semifinal, following losses at UEFA Euro 2024 (2-1) and the UEFA Nations League 2025 (5-4).

For Mbappe, the defeat ended an extraordinary World Cup record. It was the first time the French superstar had lost a World Cup match after starting in the playing XI. His previous defeats did not officially count, as he came off the bench against Tunisia in the 2022 group stage, while the 2022 World Cup final against Argentina is recorded by FIFA as a draw because it was decided on penalties.

Goalkeeper Unai Simon also achieved a remarkable milestone by registering his sixth clean sheet of the tournament, the highest by any goalkeeper in a single edition of the FIFA World Cup.

Teenage sensation Lamine Yamal continued his remarkable dominance over Mbappe in knockout football. Since the French forward joined Real Madrid, Yamal has now won all six knockout meetings between the two, including victories in the UEFA Euro 2024 semifinal, Spanish Super Cup finals in 2025 and 2026, the Copa del Rey final 2025, the UEFA Nations League semifinal 2025, and now the FIFA World Cup semifinal.

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente also etched his name into the history books by becoming the manager with the most matches across the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship without suffering a defeat. Under his leadership, Spain have recorded 13 victories and one draw, highlighting the remarkable consistency of his side.

France’s elimination also denied them a place in a third consecutive World Cup final, leaving Brazil (1994-2002) and Germany (1982-1990) as the only nations to have achieved that feat. Brazilian legend Cafu also remains the only player in history to appear in three successive World Cup finals.

With confidence soaring and momentum firmly on their side, Spain now stand just one victory away from lifting their second FIFA World Cup trophy, while France are left to reflect on a disappointing end to a campaign that had promised so much.
